Brewers, #4 Herons Play To Scoreless Draw

Zimmer records seventh shutout

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Women's Soccer team closed out a busy weekend with a scoreless draw against visiting #4 William Smith Sunday afternoon at Gordon Field. Teresa Zimmer (Long Valley, NJ) picked up her second shutout of the weekend and seventh clean sheet of the season for the Brewers.
 
Sunday's draw moves Vassar to 8-3-4 overall on the season and to 2-1-4 against league rivals, while William Smith remains unbeaten at 10-0-4 overall and 5-0-3 in Liberty League play.
 
Vassar moves into sole possession of fifth play in the league standings with Sunday's point, a single point clear of sixth place Clarkson and one-point shy of fourth place St. Lawrence.
 
How It Happened
  • William Smith finished the first half with a 9-0 advantage in shots and took the only three corner kicks of the opening stanza.
  • The Heron's best opportunity came nearly 15 minutes into the game when Julia DiMenna had a look at a yawning cage and the Vassar back line was able to clear the ball from the goal mouth to keep the game scoreless.
  • William Smith had back-to-back chances late in the opening period when a Maggie Speckhart shot hit the crossbar and a rebound attempt from Shayna Straney attempt floated high.
  • Zimmer finished the opening half with three stops, with the final save coming on a Katine Berg shot 43:12 into the contest.
  • Vassar recorded its first shot of the game and had its best opportunity of the afternoon when Ariana Pjetri (Yorktown Heights, NY) was played into the box and struck a shot that just sailed outside the right post 2:32 into the second frame.
  • Zimmer made two big saves in the late stages of regulation, turning aside a pair of Julia Bragg shots with just over 10 minutes left to play.
  • Vassar's lone shot on goal in the game came in in the 74th minute when Jessica Young (The Woodlands, Texas) hit a low shot from outside the box that was denied by William Smith keeper Kristen Nelson.
  • William Smith held a 6-3 advantage in shots after halftime.
  • Corner kicks after halftime went to the Herons by a 3-1 margin.

  • Zimmer finished the contest with five saves and picked up her seventh shutout of the season.
