Field Hockey Falls Late to Ithaca

Baker scores lone goal for the Brewers

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Natalie Descalso scored the game-winning goal early in the fourth quarter to send Ithaca to a 2-1 victory over the Vassar College Field Hockey team on Sunday afternoon at Weinberg Field. The Brewers move to 10-5 overall and 5-2 in Liberty League play while the Bombers earn the top seed in the Liberty League Championship and improve to 13-4 overall and 6-1 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Brewers had a strong opportunity just 35 seconds in as senior Hailey Brigger's shot was saved by Ithaca goalkeeper Alex Clough. 
  • Following a scoreless opening quarter, senior Tori Baker got Vassar an early lead as she followed up a rebound to put the Brewers ahead at the 10:30 mark of the second period.
  • The Bombers tied the game up with about four minutes left in the first half as Meara Bury converted a penalty stroke to tie it at one.
  • Decalso's game-winner came off a penalty corner just a minute and half into the fourth quarter off a pass from Emma Garver.
  • Vassar earned a penalty corner with a minute left in regulation but Baker's shot went wide as the Bombers held the 2-1 advantage.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Baker scored her fourth goal of the season and recorded five shots along with sophomore Sofia Beseth tallying six shots.
  • Senior Sarah Dumaresq took the loss in goal as she made one save.
FOR THE BOMBERS
  • Descalso and Bury each tallied a goal while Garver recorded an assist.
  • Clough earned the win in net as she made six saves.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar concludes the regular season with a road trip to New Paltz on Saturday.
  • Ithaca travels to Ursinus for its regular season finale on Saturday.
