Field Hockey Uses Two First Quarter Goals to Defeat Skidmore

Four different goal scorers lead the way for the Brewers

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - The Vassar College Field Hockey team scored two first quarter goals to take an early lead and never relinquished it as the Brewers defeated Skidmore 4-2 on the road on Sunday afternoon. Vassar improves to 9-4 overall and 4-1 in Liberty League play while the Thoroughbreds drop to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in conference action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vassar took the early lead halfway through the first period as senior Hailey Brigger knocked home her third goal of the season at the 7:58 mark.
  • The Brewers doubled its lead a minute and a half later as senior Juliana Ishimine scored on an assist from classmate Katie Hieb to hold a 2-0 lead with five minutes left in the opening quarter.
  • Skidmore's Colby Paul threatened to cut the lead in half off a penalty corner but senior goalkeeper Sarah Dumaresq turned away the shot to keep the game scoreless.
  • Vassar had shots from senior Molly Zahnleuter, first year Karina Hoffman and Brigger saved by Thorougbreds goalkeeper Victoria Bodnar to hold the Brewers lead to 2-0 at the end of the first period.
  • Following a scoreless second quarter, the Thoroughbreds trimmed the lead down to one as CC Wetter scored off a penalty corner insert from Tobi Dolan just two minutes into the second half.
  • Vassar pushed its lead back to two goals five minutes into the fourth quarter as Zahnleuter knocked home a feed off a penalty corner insert from senior Jaclyn Narleski.
  • The Brewers expanded its lead to 4-1 as sophomore Sydney Kovel scored for the second time this season after Hoffman's shot banged off the post with three and a half minutes left.
  • Dolan's goal following a penalty corner on a deflection from a shot from Brooke Golden to reduce the lead to two with two and a half minutes left.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Brigger and Zahnleuter each recorded their third goals of the season while Ishimine and Kovel each tallied their second goal of the year.
  • Hieb registered her first assist of the year while Narleski registered her second assist of the season.
  • Dumaresq earned the victory in goal while making one save in the first half while first year Grace Wiley made one save in the second half in net.
FOR THE THOROUGHBREDS
  • Wetter's goal was her 10th of the season while Dolan recorded a goal and an assist.
  • Golden added an assist as Bodnar made six saves in the loss in goal.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar currently sits in a two-way tie for first place in the Liberty League and will continue its two game road trip when they head to Union on Friday afternoon.
  • Skidmore plays host to non-conference foe Russell Sage on Wednesday.
