Brewers Battle Past St. Lawrence, 1-0

Watkins nets game winner

Poughkeepsie, NY – Kinlay Watkins (Berkeley, CA) scored in the 64th minute with the only goal of the game as the Vassar College Men's Soccer team earned a key Liberty League victory Friday afternoon with a 1-0 home win over visiting St. Lawrence.

Friday's victory pushed the Brewers to 6-3-4 overall on the season and 2-1-2 in conference play, while St. Lawrence falls to 5-4-2 overall and 3-2-0 in Liberty League play.

How It Happened
  • A tightly contested first half did not see a shot until a Baker Diaz attempt from the Saints just over 19 minutes into the contest.
  • Vassar's first attempt did not come until the 23rd minute when a Brandon Liu (Seattle, WA) attempt went out wide to the left.
  • Owen Fauth (Keene, NH) had a strong scoring chance in the  27th minute when he drilled a shot over the bar.
  • The Brewers had two more chances in the late stages of the first half when Jackson Allen (Chapel Hill, NC) had a shot blocked and Koray Tekin (Winter Park, FL) sailed the rebound high over the bar.
  • Tekin had another shot in the closing minutes of the half that resulted in Ben Woelfinger's only save of the half.
  • Vassar posted a 5-2 advantage in shots over the course of the opening 45 minutes.
  • The Brewers finished with the only two corner kicks of the opening stanza.
  • Coming out of halftime Duncan Keker (Oakland, CA) had a shot inside the box off a corner kick denied by Woelfinger just under five minutes into the period.
  • The Brewers had a shot in the 63rd minute bang off the bottom of the bar and stay out before Watkins knocked home the game winner just under a minute later.
  • Otis Wildman (Tampa, FL) started the play on the end line and found Keker inside the box who put the ball on Watkins foot. Watkins banged a shot off the far post and in at 63:25 for the only scoring the Brewers would need in the game.
  • Following the goal, Vassar tightened up an already strong defensive effort, allowing just three attempts over the final 25 minutes of the contest.
  • Vassar doubled up the Saints in shots after halftime, 6-3.
  • Second half corner kicks went to the Brewers by a 7-2 margin.
