Men’s Soccer Drops Heartbreaker To Clarkson On Senior Day

Golden Knights score late in regulation

Poughkeepsie, NY – The Vassar College Men's Soccer team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to visiting Clarkson Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at Gordon Field. Prior to the contest, Vassar honored seniors Aidan Wisherd (Bedford, NH), Liam Kleitz (Philadelphia, PA) and Immanuel Clement-Sealey (Brooklyn, NY) for their contributions to the program.
 
Saturday's loss drops Vassar to 6-4-4 overall on the season and 2-2-2 in Liberty League play, while the Golden Knights improve to 8-4-0 and 4-3-0 in conference action.
 
How It Happened
  • The two teams played a tightly contested contest throughout with the visitors finding the deciding goal in the waning moments of regulation time.
  • Over the course of the opening 45 minutes, Vassar finished with a slim 5-4 advantage in shots.
  • Each team took one corner kick prior to the intermission.
  • The Brewers' best chances came late in the first half when Kyle Lopes (El Dorado Hills, CA) had a shot saved and Eli Torrey (Philadelphia, PA) saw his rebound attempt deflected out of bounds.
  • Vasilis Ganasoulis (Glen Head, NY) kept the Golden Knights off the board with a pair of first half saves.
  • Coming out of halftime, Duncan Keker (Oakland, CA) tried to bend a shot in from the right wing with the Clarkson goalie off his line, but the shot hit the outside of the frame eight minutes into the second frame.
  • Clarkson finally broke through with 2:55 left to play when Nolan Grady took a pass from Eric McKean and found his way to the top of the box and buried a shot inside the near post for the only tally of the game.
  • Vassar responded with its best chance of the half with just over two minutes left to play when Clement-Sealy drilled a shot from the top of the box that was corralled by Clarkson keeper Josh Morelli.
  • Shots in the second half were even at 4-4 and there were no corner kicks after halftime.
 
For The Brewers
  • Wisherd made his second career start on Senior Day, playing the opening 3:13 of the contest.
  • Ganasoulis finished the game and recorded a pair of saves.
  • Owen Fauth (Keene, NH) led the team with two shots in the game.
  • Fauth joined Clement-Sealey, Otis Wildman (Tampa, FL) and Lopes with shots on target.
 
For The Golden Knights
  • Grady scored his team leading sixth goal of the season and led the team with four shots.
  • McKean picked up his second helper of the year.
  • Morelli made four saves, earning his fifth shutout of the season.
 
Match Statistics
  • Vassar held a slim 9-8 advantage in overall shots and a 4-3 edge in shots on goal.
  • Corner kicks in the contest were even at 1-1.
 
What's Next
  • Vassar closes a three-game homestand next Saturday when it hosts Ithaca.
  • Clarkson hosts RPI next Saturday.
