Field Hockey Posts Shutout Victory Over St. Lawrence

Four different goal scorers lead the way for the Brewers

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - The Vassar College Field Hockey team posted its sixth shutout of the season as the Brewers earned a 5-0 win over Liberty League foe St. Lawrence at Weinberg Field on Friday afternoon. The Brewers improve to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in conference play while the Saints fall to 3-9 overall and 0-4 in Liberty League play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vassar tallied the eventual game-winning goal at the 8:23 mark of the first quarter as senior Maggie Werner knocked home a blocked shot from classmate Katie Hieb to take a 1-0 lead.
  • The Brewers doubled its lead right before the end of the opening period as sophomore Sydney Kovel scored her first collegiate goal with just over a minute left in the opening period.
  • Following a scoreless second quarter, Vassar scored twice in the third quarter as senior Molly Zahnleuter buried a crossing pass from classmate Jaclyn Narleski six minutes into the period.
  • The Brewers quickly tallied its fourth of the game as first year Karina Hoffman scored a minute later to make it 4-0.
  • Lily Gubbins threatened for St. Lawrence's first goal of the game at the end of the third but first year Grace Wiley made a strong save.
  • Senior Adah Anderson made a key defensive save in the fourth quarter to keep the game scoreless with eight minutes remaining off a penalty corner.
  • Hoffman finished off the scoring for Vassar as she knocked home a rebound off a save from Saints goalkeeper Cara Vredenberg with just over three minutes remaining.
FOR THE BREWERS
  • Hoffman scored twice in the contest to push her goal total up to three while Kovel scored her first career goal.
  • Zahnelueter tallied her second goal of the season while Werner scored the third goal of the season.
  • Senior Sarah Dumaresq earned the win in goal in 30 minutes of action while Wiley made one save in 30 minutes of play.
FOR THE SAINTS
  • Gubbins recorded two shots on goal for St. Lawrence.
  • Vredenberg made 12 saves in net for the Saints.
UP NEXT
  • Vassar heads to conference foe Skidmore on Sunday afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. matchup.
  • St. Lawrence plays host to RPI on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
