POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Powered by a three-goal opening half and a pair of first career goals, the Vassar College men's soccer team posted a 5-0 victory over SUNY Cobleskill on Gordon Field on Wednesday evening. The victory moves the Brewers to 2-1-0 on the season, while the Fighting Tigers slip to 0-3-0 overall.
The Brewers got things going early with the opening goal coming in the 13th minute of play. Sophomore defender
Brandon Liu navigated down the right side, slicing the defense as he tipped a high ball to the middle just before the endline. Sophomore midfielder
Duncan Keker was there, heading the ball into the open net as the Cobleskill goalie was out of position to defend on the right. Vassar made it a 2-0 game about two minutes later as senior midfielder
Ryan Lane collected the ball, splitting down the middle and past the Fighting Tigers defense as he sent a 1-on-1 shot at the goalie to the right for the goal.
Sophomore forward
Jackson Hall gave Vassar the 3-0 advantage at the 26-minute mark. After being tripped up by the Cobleskill defense in the box, Hall was awarded a penalty kick. His shot sailed to the left past the diving goalie, banking off the crossbar and in for the tally - which was the first of his young career.
Second half action saw Vassar once again drop in a shot late, as senior captain
Owen Fauth scored in the 68th minute. With a flurry of activity in the Cobleskill box, Fauth crossed the ball to the middle and classmate
Kyle Lopes, who stepped back from the defense, sending a pass back to Fauth on the right side as he charged in and rocketed a shot that Fighting Tigers goalie John Gergen was unable to coral as it sailed in on the left.
The Brewers closed out the scoring in the 87th minute as senior defender
Nolan Alexander sent a long, perfectly placed ball in from just beyond the midline. His pass caught a speeding Antonio Ferraiolo-Costa, who banked the shot into the right side of the net. That goal marked the first of his career as well.
In goal, senior captain
Eric Wnorowski earned the victory, recording two stops over 68:47 of action. Junior
Aidan Wisherd came onto the field for the first time this season, making one stop in 21:13 of relief. For Cobleskill, Gergen posted 10 saves in the full 90 minutes of play.
Vassar posted a 37-4 mark in shots for the game, including a 15-3 edge in shots on goal. The Brewers also dominated on corner kicks with a 14-0 margin.
The Brewers return to the pitch on Saturday, traveling to Stevens for a 7pm contest against the Ducks in Hoboken, NJ. Cobleskill is also in action on Saturday, hosting Alfred State at 1pm.
