POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The No. 19 nationally ranked Vassar field hockey team won its third straight contest on Sunday afternoon as the Brewers defeated Endicott 5-2 in the Betty Richey Tournament Championship match. Junior
Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA) scored a hat trick in the game and the game was called with 5:48 remaining in the fourth quarter due to lightning.
Vassar got on the board first in the first quarter after a penalty corner from junior
Katie Hieb (Pewaukee, WI) led to Brigger scoring her first goal on a feed from junior
Jaclyn Narleski (Basking Ridge, NJ). Endicott evened the score with just over a minute left on a penalty stroke from Claire Boncek. The Brewers got back on top with 20 seconds left in the quarter on Brigger's second tally from a pass from senior
Ella Pearl (San Francisco, CA).
Vassar had three penalty corners early in the second quarter but couldn't break through for the third goal of the game. The Gulls answered with a goal from Olivia Lampasona on a pass from Megan Hogan to tie the score at two just under two minutes left in the first half.
Endicott had mutiple good chances early in the third quarter but senior
Sarah Ryan (Swampscott, MA) made a defensive save to keep the score tied at two. Brigger gave Vassar the lead once again with her third goal of the game on a penalty stroke with under seven minutes to go in the period. Sophomore
Max Meijaard (Heemstede, The Netherlands) knocked home her first goal of the year from a feed from junior
Molly Zahnleuter (Clifton Park, NY) with 5:10 left in the third quarter to give Vassar a 4-2 lead after three quarters.
The Brewers pushed the lead to three just 53 seconds into the fourth quarter when sophomore
Gianna Trunfio (Clinton, NY) scored from an awkward angle and banked it off the goalkeeper for a 5-2 advantage.
Brigger's hat trick pushed her to five goals on the season as Trunfio and Meijaard each tallied their first goals of the season. Narleski picked up her second assist of the season. Junior goalkeeper
Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA) picked up her third victory and made one save in the contest. Brianna Anslow made six saves in goal for Endicott in the loss.Â
Vassar returns to Weinberg Field on Wednesday evening to take on the Western Connecticut State Wolves. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
