Vassar Earns Liberty League Victory Over RPI

Trunfio and Brigger each scored twice for the Brewers

TROY, N.Y. - The #ARV Vassar College Field Hockey earned its first Liberty League win on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers tallied a 5-1 road victory over RPI. Sophomore Gianna Trunfio (Clinton, NY) and junior Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA) each scored two goals in the Vassar win.

Following a scoreless first quarter, Trunfio got the Brewers on the board just 20 seconds into the second quarter on an assist from junior Maggie Werner (Berkeley, CA). The goal was Trunfio's third of the season and Werner's first assist of the year. Junior Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA) made a big save on Lauren McCarthy midway through the second quarter but Dani Samuelson snuck home a rebound after a wide shot to tie the game up at one apiece heading to halftime.

Vassar opened up its lead in the third quarter as Brigger tallied her fifth goal of the season just under four minutes into the quarter to give the Brewers its second lead of the contest. Brigger scored her second goal just a few minutes later to double its lead to two with eight minutes left in the quarter.

After a Vassar penalty corner and two Brigger blocked shots, freshman Sofia Beseth (Pepper Pike, OH) buried her first collegiate goal with just over three minutes left in the third quarter. Vassar added its fifth goal of the contest in the fourth quarter as Werner set up Trunfio once again three minutes into the final quarter to give the Brewers its 5-1 lead.

Vassar finished the day with a 15-10 advantage in shots and also held a 9-4 edge in shots on goal on the day. RPI held the edge in penalty corners at 8-6. \

Brigger finished the day with her team-leading fifth and sixth goals of the season and led the team in shots with six. Trunfio tallied her third and fourth goals of the season and scored on her only two shots of the day. Samuelson had the lone goal for RPI and Brianna Duba led the team in shots with four.

Dumaresq earned her sixth victory of the season and made three saves in the contest. Jen Richardson took the loss in goal for the Engineers and made four saves.

The Brewers continue Liberty League play next Saturday as they travel to Ithaca. The contest with the Bombers is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
