POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Powered by a pair of goals from sophomore midfielder
Duncan Keker, the Vassar College men's soccer team posted a 4-0 win over the Rochester Institute of Technology in its Liberty League season opener on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers move to 5-3-0 and 1-0-0 on the season, while the Tigers are now 2-2-3 and 1-1-0 in Liberty League action.
Keker got things going in the 33rd minute with the first of his two goals in the contest - this one proving to be the eventual game-winner. Senior midfielder
Kinlay Watkins caught a quick pass, dribbling into the top left corner of the box as he one-timed it high in the air on goal. Keker was there to bury it, heading it in past Tigers keeper Jason Trapp for the open goal.
That score stood until the 49th minute as sophomore
Danny Berry converted for his second of the season. The ball came in on a corner attempt, coming loose from a melee in front to sophomore defender
Charlie Rodhouse. Doing a quick dribble, Rodhouse sent the ball toward the middle near the high box as Berry corralled it and then fired into the back left corner for the 2-0 lead.
Vassar's next goal came in the 71st minute as sophomore forward
Jackson Hall took advantage of an RIT defensive miscue from 10-yards out of the box. Dribbling the stolen ball, he sent a pass up as Watkins outran the defender, firing it into the right corner past the keeper.
The Brewers closed out the game's scoring on Keker's second tally with Hall earning his second straight assist after catching up with a long pass from the other end. Hall dribbled it in toward middle as an RIT defender got tangled at his feet. The ball popped loose with Keker running into the left side for a quick one-timer past the RIT netminder.
The Brewers owned a 9-7 advantage in shots for the contest, including a 6-2 mark on goal. Vassar also had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Senior netminder
Eric Wnorowski earned the victory, recording two saves in 85:49 of action. Junior
Aidan Wisherd came on for the final 4:11 of relief and was not forced to make a save. In the RIT goal, Trapp made two stops.
Vassar returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Bard for a 7pm contest against the Raptors.
