No. 20 Field Hockey Takes Down Ramapo

Three Brewers find the back of the net in the 3-1 victory

MAHWAH, N.J. – The No. 20 Vassar College Field Hockey team returned to its winning ways on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers defeated Ramapo 3-1. Three different Brewers scored in the victory to push Vassar to 5-2 on the season.

The Brewers got on the board early in the first quarter as Vassar earned a penalty corner just under two minutes into the contest. Sophomore Gianna Trunfio (Clinton, NY) scored her second goal of the season on a feed from junior Adah Anderson (San Diego, CA) at the 2:13 mark of the first quarter.

Junior goalkeeper Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA) turned away a scoring chance late in the first quarter and then made another save on a shot from Katie Yarussi early in the second quarter. Trunfio almost had her second goal of the day two minutes into the second quarter but the shot rang off the post.

Neither team had a shot on goal in the third quarter as Vassar had two shots go wide and Ramapo had one go wide 42 seconds before the end of the period.

Ramapo had two early penalty corners in the fourth quarter but the Vassar defense stepped up and blocked the only shot attempt from Victoria Docherty to keep the 1-0 lead. Following a green card on the Roadrunners, sophomore Leilani Llamas (Grapevine, TX) tallied her third goal of the season on an assists from sophomore Max Meijaard (Heemstede, The Netherlands) two and a half minutes into the final quarter to push the Brewers lead to two.

Ramapo earned a penalty stroke with just over six minutes to go in the contest but Dumaresq made a save on Docherty. However, the Roadrunners were awarded another penalty stroke and Emily Ricciardi scored to cut the Brewers lead to one.

The Brewers quickly responded and pushed the lead back to two after junior Jaclyn Narleski (Basking Ridge, NJ) fired one into the back of the net off a feed from senior Sam Kass (Ann Arbor, MI) with five minutes remaining in the game.

Vassar finished the contest with a 16-11 advantage in shots as well as a 7-4 edge in shots on goal. The Roadrunners had the edge in penalty corners at 9-7 on the day.

Dumaresq earned her fifth victory of the season in goal for the Brewers and made two saves. Roadrunners goalkeeper Allison Tanasy made four saves in net in the loss.

The Brewers continue their road trip next week when they head to William Paterson on Wednesday evening. The contest with the Pioneers is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Wayne, NJ.
