Women's Soccer Blanks Western Connectictut State, 2-0

First half tallies power Brewers to second straight victory

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Powered by a two-goal opening half, the Vassar College women's soccer team dominated its way to a 2-0 win over Western Connecticut State University in non-conference action on Wednesday evening. The win marks the second in a row for the Brewers, who are now 2-2-1 on the young season. The visiting Wolves slip to 2-4-0 overall.

The Brewers opened up the game's scoring in the 13th minute on an outstanding running play. Corralling the ball, senior captain Violet Munnelly dribbled toward the top right of the box, sending a high cross into the box to a speeding Jacqueline Morrison. The junior forward raced ahead past a defender, booting it past the goalie into the right corner.

Vassar, which held an 11-1 advantage in shots (7-1 on goal) for the frame, made it a 2-0 margin in the 27th minute as senior captain Jessica Young sent in a perfectly placed free kick from just inside the midfield. The ball went to senior captain Sydney MacDonald as she headed the ball toward the middle with classmate Isabel Leinenweber finishing the attempt with a header in front for the goal.

Second half action saw the Brewers nearly make it a 3-0 margin early as Munnelly headed in a shot that went just wide of the goal in the 47th minute of play.

The Wolves also tried to capitalize as senior Myah Croze carried the ball into the zone, but her shot sailed past Brewers keeper Teresa Zimmer to keep the visitors off the board. In the 69th minute, Western Connecticut saw its best opportunity come off the foot of sophomore forward Suzana Imetovski, but her point-blank shot was scooped up in front by Zimmer.

Following a wide shot by Imetovski in the 77th minute, the Brewers nearly answered again as sophomore middie Noelle Namba sent a shot in at the 84-minute mark, but senior goalie Kristen Roessler was there to make the stop.

The Brewers held a 15-6 advantage in shots for the contest, including an 8-2 margin on goal. Vassar had a 4-2 edge in corners as well. Zimmer earned the win, making two saves in 90 minutes of action. On the other end, Roessler recorded six saves in the loss.

Vassar returns to the field on Saturday, traveling to Oneonta State for a 2pm game against the Red Dragons.
