Montclair, N.J. - The No. 20 Vassar Field Hockey team suffered its second straight loss on Wednesday evening as the Brewers dropped a 4-0 decision on the road at Montclair State. Junior goalkeeper
Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA) made three saves in the loss.
The Brewers and Red Hawks both went scoreless in the first half as the teams combined for eight penalty corners but neither team could break through for the first goal of the contest.
Montclair State found the back of the net for the first time just under three minutes into the second quarter when Carlie Van Tessel scored off a rebound following a Dumaresq save. The Red Hawks scored their second goal three minutes later following a penalty corner as Tori Sutera netted her first goal of the game on a feed from Van Tassel.
Just 45 seconds into the second half, Montclair State scored their third goal as Sutera tallied her second goal of the night on an assist from Gab Maisto. Vassar had multiple opportunites off of penalty corners in the third quarter but Red Hawks goalie Lauren Pickul turned away several chances for the Brewers. Maisto scored her first goal of the night right before the end of the third quarter on a penalty stroke to give the Red Hawks a 4-0 lead.
Vassar and Montclair State each recorded 12 shots on the night and the Red Hawks held a slim 7-6 edge in shots on goal. The Brewers held the edge in penalty corners at 17-10. Junior
Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA) led Vassar with three shots as six different players tallied a shot on goal. Sutera tallied a five point night for the Red Hawks while Maisto and Van Tessel each had three point nights.
Pickul earned the shutout victory for Montclair State as she turned away six shots on the evening. Dumaresq took the loss in goal for Vassar as she finished the night with three saves.
The Brewers will return to action on Saturday afternoon as they continue their New Jersey road swing with a trip to Ramapo. The contest with the Roadrunners is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start.
