UNION, N.J. – The No. 19 Vassar field hockey suffered its first loss on Saturday afternoon as the Brewers dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 contest in overtime to No. 9 Kean. Junior
Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA) had five saves in goal for Vassar.
Vassar had a couple good opportunities early off a penalty corner as senior
Ella Pearl (San Francisco, CA) had a shot turned aside by Cougars goalkeeper Jenna Flemings and sophomore
Gianna Trunfio (Clinton, NY) got denied by a great defensive save from Morgan Stump.
Kean got on the board first in the contest as Maddison Gonzales scored with just over three minutes left in the first quarter on an assist from Stump.
The Brewers found the equalizer with just 32 seconds left in the first half when junior
Maggie Werner (Berkeley, CA) knocked home a rebound off a Pearl shot to tie the game up heading into halftime.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the second half as the two teams traded multiple penalty corners but the Brewers headed to overtime for the first time this season.
The Cougars earned a penalty corner just 2 minutes into the overtime period and Laura Stump buried a cross from Peyton Mann to take home the 2-1 victory.
Kean finished the game outshooting Vassar 15-6 and also held a slim edge in shots on goal at 7-6. Pearl led the team in shots with two while Werner tallied her third goal of the season.
Dumaresq made five saves in the loss while Kean's Flemings made four saves in the win. The Cougars also held a 13-6 advantage in penalty corners on the day.
Vassar continues its six-game road trip as the Brewers head to Montclair State on Wednesday evening. The tilt with the Red Hawks is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
