NORTHAMPTON, MA - The 19th ranked Vassar Field Hockey team earned its first victory of the season on Thursday evening as the Brewers took down Smith College 3-0 on the road. Three different Brewers scored in the win and junior
Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA) posted her first shutout of the campaign. Vassar goes to 1-0 on the season while the Pioneers fall to 0-1.
Each team only had one shot in the opening quarter as Dumaresq turned away an early opportunity from Smith's Victoria Mellow. The Brewers turned up the pressure in the second quarter as Smith's goalie Rory Harper made five saves before sophomore
Alexa Gwyn (Palo Alto, CA) buried one in the back of the net with only 41 seconds left in the quarter.
The Brewers outshot the Pioneers 11-2 in the first half as Harper made six saves in the half for the Pioneers. Vassar also held a 4-0 edge in penalty corners in the first 30 minutes.
Both teams were held scoreless in the third quarter as the shots held even at 2-2. Vassar had one penalty corner in the quarter but Smith's defense stepped up to turn away the threat. Vassar opened up the scoring in the fourth quarter with a goal at the 48:59 mark from junior
Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA) followed by sophomore
Tori Baker's (Bedminster, NJ) goal with just over six minutes left in the game.
Vassar finished the second half with the shots advantage at 10-3 as well as a 3-1 advantage in penalty corners. The Brewers ended the contest with a 21-5 edge in shots with 15 of those shots being on net. Vassar also dominated the penalty corners category 7-1.
Harper finished the night with 11 saves for Smith in the loss while Dumaresq earned the victory while making three saves. Gwyn and Brigger led the night with nine shots combined and fired seven of those shots on goal.
Vassar returns home to host the Betty Richey tournament this weekend at Weinberg Field. The Brewers take on Stevens in the 11:00 a.m. game on Saturday morning while Marywood faces Endicott in the second game which is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start.
