Brewers suffer 17-8 loss to Engineers in league road action

TROY, NY – Powered by a four-goal effort from Megan Shay, the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women's lacrosse team posted a 17-8 victory over Vassar College in Liberty League action on Friday evening. The Engineers move to 8-2 overall and 4-1 in league play, while the Brewers are now 3-7 with a 1-4 mark in the Liberty League.

RPI opened the game's scoring as Shay and Alli McLaughlin both converted for  2-0 lead at the 10:01 mark. Senior captain Ashley Roberts got the Brewers on the board with a free position tally at 8:01, but a 7-0 run for the home team to close out the first quarter and open the second, saw the Engineers take a 9-1 lead at halftime.

Roberts then converted for her 13th of the season at 12:38 to make it a 9-2 game in the third quarter. RPI answered with two tallies, but the Brewers responded as junior attack Annie Uyeki fired in back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 11-4.

Following another RPI score, rookie Reilly Mulcahy dropped in her 14th of the season, but two more goals sent the home team into the fourth quarter with a 14-5 advantage.

In the final quarter, Vassar began to battle back as rookie Emma Torkelson netted her second of the season. She followed that up mid-way through the frame with back-to-back goals, but it wasn't enough as the Engineers tallied two more for the final score.

RPI saw Shay lead all goal scorers with four on the afternoon. Rylie Maready added three goals with two assists, while Sabrina Torcellini had a game-best five assists. McLaughlin dropped in two goals with two assists, while Sophie Goddard and Claire Shemo each had two goals. In goal, Olivia Kimball made two saves for the win over 30 minutes. Julianna Lucas came on for a quarter, not recording a stop, while Jenny Canfield had one save in 15 minutes.
