POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar baseball team snapped a two-game skid with a 12-4 victory over Mount Saint Mary in non-conference play on Tuesday afternoon. The Brewers poured on 13 hits, and junior Nick Greenhawt (Heber City, UT) knocked in back-to-back home runs. With the win, Vassar moves to 8-11, while the Knights slip to 8-9.
Junior Bryce Grathwohl (Cutchogue, NY) struck out two batters to open the first inning, and then the Vassar offense scored a run in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore Reid Lapekas (McKinney, TX) singled and advanced to second on a first baseman error. Junior Ezra Caspi (Holmdel, NJ) hit a single to left field to bring Lapekas home.
Vassar took out the Knights' batters 1-2-3 in the second inning. After junior Alex Warren (Bethesda, MD) doubled to the right-center, he reached third on another Mount Saint Mary's error. Warren made it 2-0 when junior Adam Talwalkar (Lexington, KY) hit a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Knights scored a run in the fourth, and it was not until the bottom of the fifth when the Brewers scored again. Lapekas led off with a triple to center field, and a sacrifice fly from first-year Ricardo Reyna (San Antonio, TX) allowed the run, and Vassar led 3-1.
In the sixth, Vassar brought in four runs, and Reyna doubled in Lapekas and freshman Michael Lee (Mercer Island, WA). Caspi followed up with a two-RBI single to center field as the Brewers took a 7-1 lead.
Greenhawt led off in the seventh and hit his first home run of the season to left-center field. Vassar added one more run before the end of the inning.
The Knights' Ryan Lutinski hit a three-run home run at the top of the eighth to cut the deficit to 9-4, but Greethawt hit another home run at his next at-bat to push it to 10-4. First-year Jack Story (Marietta, GA) singled in Christian Baaki (Amsterdam, NY) and Daniel Laderman (Tel Aviv, Israel) to secure the win.
