SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Vassar baseball team split against Union in Sunday's doubleheader. The Dutchmen (9-11, 4-5 Liberty) won 5-8 in the first game, and then the Brewers (9-12, 2-5 Liberty) took the second 7-2.
The Brewers opened the top of the first with one run to take a 1-0 lead. After sophomore Reid Lapekas walked, junior Ezra Caspi was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Andrew Kanellis flew out to the center field to advance Lapekas to third. Sophomore Ty Murray hit to shortstop, but Lapekas reached home.
Junior Bryce Gathwohl struck out the first Union batter but walked the next. The Brewers then used a double play to end the inning. Vassar took a quick three outs at its turn to bat as the Dutchmen capped off the second with a double play.
Union took the lead in the bottom of the second when Sebastian Pike doubled to the right-center to bring Sam Strazza in for the tying run. Pike reached third on a Jack Davis single, and then Pike stole home to give the Dutchmen a 1-2 lead.
The Dutchmen built to a 1-7 lead at the bottom of the third, with Jono Santos and Pike hitting home runs for four RBI. Union then tacked on one more run in the fourth.
Vassar was held scoreless until the top of the eighth when junior Adam Talwalkar hit a two-run home run to cut the lead to 3-8. The Union pitcher walked the following two Vassar batters with the bases loaded, bringing the score to 5-8. The Brewers went 1-2-3 at the top of the ninth as the Dutchmen took game one.
In the second game, Union took a 0-1 lead in the first following a Vassar wild pitch. Pitcher Cole Eggleston remained composed and struck out three Dutchmen batters in the inning. Vassar responded with Kanellis singling in Lapekas for a run, and Kanellis reached home after a Nick Greenhawt double. Greenhawt gave the Brewers a 3-1 lead by scoring on a wild pitch.
Lapekas singled to right field to allow Talwalkar to score in the second inning as Vassar took a 4-1 lead. The game remained scoreless until the fifth when the Brewers rattled three more runs. First-year Daniel Laderman scored on a balk, and then Greenhawt hit a two-run home run to make it 7-1.
At the top of the seventh, sophomore Joe Sabo came in to pitch for Vassar and struck out all three Union batters to give the Brewers to win.
Eggleston (1-2) pitched 5.0 innings with eight strikeouts, four hits, and two runs in 20 batters faced.
Vassar hosts Union next on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
