Hyde Powers Men's Lacrosse to Senior Day Win Over Knights

Brewers post 14-8 win over Clarkson in regular season home finale

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – Powered by a game-high five goals from senior midfielder Logan Hyde, the Vassar College men's lacrosse team posted a 14-8 victory over Clarkson University in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon. The win moves the Brewers to 7-6 overall and 2-4 in league play, while the Golden Knights move to 10-5 and 1-5 in the Liberty League.

In a game that saw the Brewers honor their four graduating seniors (Hyde, midfielder Connor Deehan, midfielder Tommy Van Pelt and defender Henry Friedman) in a pre-game ceremony, Hyde got the scoring started early with an unassisted tally at the 14:19 mark of the opening quarter. Clarkson tied things up as Brad Wiley fed Stebastian Geiger down low, but Hyde once again countered, burying a feed from junior attack Riley Olds with 10:26 to play.

The Golden Knights managed to tied the score at 2-all a few minutes later, but Vassar opened a lead it would not surrender at 7:26 as sophomore middie Dan Negron scored, followed less than a minute later as sophomore attack Troy Santise passed it to Olds to build a 4-2 edge. Clarkson saw Matt Reilly score to pull it to within one, but goals from Santise and Hyde closed out the frame with Vassar up, 6-3.

Second quarter action opened with back-to-back goals from Wiley and Alex Seiler to pull Clarkson to within 6-5. The Golden Knights nearly tied it, but an infraction in the crease disallowed a goal and the Brewers rebounded on the other end as Hyde dropped in his fourth of the game at 6:42. CU added another tally, but sophomore attack Ian Zumpano closed out the quarter with his 21st of the season for an 8-6 advantage at halftime.

The Golden Knights bookended a pair of goals in the third quarter, but scores from Santise and Hyde fell in between as the Brewers led 10-8 with 15 minutes to play. The Brewers dominated the fourth quarter, powered by goals from Olds, Santise, Zumpano and Negron to close out the game.

In addition to Hyde, Vassar was paced by three goals and two assists from Santise, who also had a ground ball and a caused turnover. Olds added two goals with a helper, while Zumpano also had two tallies and an assist. Sophomore defender Solomon Hess powered the defense, recording nine ground balls with two caused turnovers, while junior midfielder James Nicholas had three ground balls and a caused turnover. Sophomore middie Thomas Cameron was 9-of-25 from the faceoff circle, while in goal, junior Jack Bagin earned the win with 19 saves on the afternoon.

Clarkson was paced by a two-goal effort from Reilly, who also had a ground ball. Geiger added a goal and an assist with three ground balls, while Penney and Seiler each had a goal. Matthew Hansen went 16-of-23 in the faceoff circle, recording a game-high 10 ground balls while Penney also had six ground balls. In goal, Jacob Mattice suffered the loss, recording eight saves on the day.

Both teams conclude their regular seasons next weekend as Vassar heads to Union for a 1pm tilt, while Clarkson welcomes Skidmore, also at 1pm.
