TROY, N.Y. – The Vassar baseball team was swept by RPI in Saturday afternoon's Liberty League doubleheader. The Brewers (11-18, 3-10 Liberty) fell 1-13 in the first game and then dropped a 4-7 decision to the Engineers (12-13, 4-7 Liberty) in the second game.
The Vassar batters struggled to find any rhythm in the opening game, being held to three hits as opposed to the Engineers' ten. RPI scored two runs in the first inning and then poured in five more in the second after Hudson Livesey hit a grand slam to left field to make it 0-7.
The Engineers added two more runs in the fourth before Vassar scored in the seventh. Sophomore Ty Murray doubled to center field, which brought Reid Lapekas home. That proved to be the Brewers' only run, and the Engineers tallied four more runs before the end of the game.
Vassar hit better in the second game and scored first in the opening inning. Sophomore Jaden Millstein led off with a double to right field and then reached third on a wild pitch. Andrew Kanellis and Nick Greenhawt walked to load the bases. An Ezra Caspi walk brought Millstein in to put the Brewers up 1-0.
RPI responded with four runs at the bottom of the frame. Joe Curci doubled in two runs, and the Engineers took a 1-4 lead. AT the top of the second, Millstein knocked a home run to right field to cut the lead to 2-4. RPI's Jack Moncur singled in three runners to push the Engineers' lead to 2-7, and then neither side scored until the seventh.
Christian Baaki doubled in Greenhawt and Kanellis in the final inning to make it 4-7, but the last Vassar batter flew out.
Vassar looks to bounce back tomorrow when they host RPI at noon on Prentiss field.
