Kretten's Six Goals Lift Women's Lacrosse Past Bard

Brewers record 14-7 victory over Raptors for Liberty League victory

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY – Powered by a game-high six goals from junior midfielder Maddy Kretten, the Vassar College women's lacrosse team posted a 14-7 victory over Bard College in Liberty League action at Ferrari Field on Wednesday evening. The Brewers move to 4-9 overall and 2-6 in league action, while the Raptors are now 2-11 and 0-8 in the Liberty League.

It was a tight contest at the start as the Brewers carried a 2-1 lead into the second stanza following goals from Kretten at 10:59, followed 30 seconds later as senior captain Ashley Roberts sent a pass over to rookie attacker Reilly Mulcahy for her 15th of the season.

Second quarter action opened with another Kretten goal as the junior converted a pass from classmate and attacker Annie Uyeki to open the two-goal lead back up at 14:09. Two minutes later saw the Brewers on a man-advantage following a yellow card on Bard. Mulcahy collected the ball, sending a pass to Kretten who converted her third of the game on the man-up.

Vassar continued to carry the momentum less than a minute later as junior attack Kateri Sanseviro fired in her first of the game and 21st of the season with 11:44 left in the second quarter as Mulcahy earned yet another assist.

Bard answered at the 8:11 mark as senior midfielder Gillian Adkins dropped one in past Johns to make it a 5-2 game. Another back-and-forth battle ensued for both teams, culminating in another Raptors goal with 2:03 to play, this time off the stick of rookie attack Izzi Poplizio. The Brewers had the final score of the frame though as freshman attack Madison Bouggess fired in a shot from Roberts at 1:34 to regain the three-goal margin.

Kretten, whose three goal first half paved the way for Vassar, continued her solid play into the third quarter. At 11:52, Kretten drove in a shot on a free position opportunity to make it a 7-3 contest. Roberts then responded for Vassar with 10:36 on the clock, notching her 17th of the season for an 8-3 margin in the game.

Despite the momentum for the visitors, it was the Raptors who swung the game into their favor beginning at the 8:25 mark as Adkins converted on the free position to make it a four-goal (8-4) contest. It would be Adkins once again at the 6:45 mark, once again taking advantage of a Brewers foul on the free position for her 13th of the year.

The Raptors continued to strike in on goal, closing the margin to two goals at the 5:43 mark as senior midfielder Rachael Yoder fired in a shot off a pass from rookie attack Sarah Child. The Brewers put a stop to the home team momentum at 4:07 as Roberts sent a pass to rookie middie Kali Ringler, flying down the right side for a quick shot past the Bard keeper Roxanne Rouskas and a man-up tally.

Vassar regained a four-goal advantage with 3:13 remaining in the third stanza as Mulcahy dropped in her 16th of the year on the free position for the 10-6 margin. The Raptors controlled the ball late, driving in on goal, but Johns was there to make a late stop to send it into the fourth quarter with the four-goal score in favor of the Brewers.

Fourth quarter action got off to a quick start as Mulcahy scored within the first minute of play to open an 11-6 lead. Following a Bard turnover seconds later, the Brewers took advantage once again as Kretten buried a feed from Uyeki for the six-goal margin with 13:20 to play.

The two collaborated once again minutes later as Uyeki set up for a free position attempt, but sent a bullet pass to the left for Kretten as the junior buried her sixth of the contest for the 13-6 score. With 9:33 remaining, Sanseviro once again found the back of the net, moving the advantage to 14-6 for Vassar.

Bard got on the board a final time at the 2:37 mark as Child notched her second of the game and 33rd of the year but the Brewers held on for the victory.

In addition to her six goals, Kretten posted three ground balls, three draw controls and also had a caused turnover on the evening. Uyeki posted three assists, adding a ground ball with three draw controls. Sanseviro added two tallies and a ground ball, while junior midfielder Trina Chou paced the team with four draw controls, adding two ground balls and a caused turnover. In goal, Johns had an outstanding evening, earning the victory with an 11-save effort.
