Brewers Fall to Hawks in Extra Innings

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar baseball team fell 9-12 in 11 innings to the visiting New Paltz Hawks on Wednesday afternoon. The Brewers (11-16) were able to take a 9-4 lead in the sixth inning, but seven New Paltz (11-13) runs in the seventh tied it up. The Hawks then scored three in the 11th to pick up the victory.

In their first at-bat, New Paltz got on the board, taking a 0-4 lead. Nick Harvey scored on a sacrifice fly, and Dean Stalzer doubled in one run. A Jordan Rios single brought two Hawks' runners home before the end of the frame.

Vassar did not respond until the third inning when Ezra Caspi singled to left field to allow Andrew Kanellis to score. The Brewers added four more runs in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. Junior Adam Talwalkar used a sacrifice fly to bring Alex Warren home, and Jaden Millstein scored a run on a New Paltz third baseman error. Kanellis then tripled to the right field to let two more runners reach home.

A New Paltz error in the fifth allowed Vassar to score two more runs, and then the Brewers picked up two more in the bottom of the sixth. Kanellis scored on a balk before Bryce Grathwohl singled to get Caspi home.

The Hawks used a five-run seventh inning to tie 9-9, with Ryan Mackle and Rios picking up singles to bring in three RBI.

A pitching battle followed with neither team scoring from the eighth to tenth innings. Senior Dawson Dullnig pitched in the ninth and struck out three Hawks' batters, but the Brewers were held to one hit in the bottom of the inning.

At the top of the 11th, Joe Sabo relieved and struck out two batters with runners on first and second. A Rios single loaded the bases, and then Justin Harvey doubled to bring home three runners. Sabo struck out the final batter, but New Paltz led 9-12. Vassar was able to get runners on first and second, but the last fly-out ended the comeback.

Kanellis finished going 3-for-5 with two triples, a double, two RBI, and two runs. Caspi went 3-for-5 with a double, a run, and one RBI.

Vassar travels to play at RPI on Sat. Apr. 23 for a doubleheader starting at noon.
