Women's Lacrosse Drops League Decision to Clarkson

Golden Knights post 15-5 win over Brewers on Saturday

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Powered by an 11-0 run through the opening quarters, the Clarkson University women's lacrosse team defeated Vassar College by a 15-5 margin in Liberty League action on Saturday at Weinberg Turf Field. The Golden Knights improve to 7-2 overall and 2-2 in league play, while the Brewers are now 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the Liberty League.

The Brewers opened the game's scoring as junior attack Kateri Sanseviro buried a feed from senior captain Ashley Roberts at the 11:45 mark. The advantage was short-lived as senior attack Sydney Roderick fired in back-to-back goals, followed by a tally in the final 33 seconds of the opening quarter by senior midfielder Mia Petrone for the 3-1 lead. The Golden Knights went on a 8-1 run from that point, scoring five straight goals in the second quarter, including one each from Roderick and Petrone, while posting three straight to open the third quarter. Rookie midfielder Emma Torkelson broke the run at the 1:42 mark of the third, firing in her first collegiate goal, but Clarkson answered as sophomore middie Madelynn Barnum tallied soon after, and opened the final quarter with a score for a 13-2 advantage.

Clarkson saw sophomore attack Hailey Millington add two straight goals mid-way through the final quarter before the Brewers mounted a comeback. Junior attack Annie Uyeki drove the lane and dropped in her 11th of the seaon at 4:43, followed a minute later by the first collegiate tally from rookie attack Margaret Norsworthy-Edghill to make it a 15-4 game with 3:30 left to play. Sanseviro fired in another goal - her 19th of the season - converting a pass from Torkelson who assisted on the previous goal, but Vassar was unable to get any closer as time expired.

Roderick paced all players with seven points on three goals and four assists, adding three caused turnovers and three ground balls. Petrone had seven draw controls to go along with three goals and an assist, while junior attack Julia Lavarnway had a goal and an assist. Barnum posted three goals with four draws. Junior defenser McKenzie Tikalsky had two caused turnovers with two ground balls, while in goal, senior Sydney Christiansen earned the win with 11 shots and just two goals before giving way to senior Laura Wing.

For Vassar, Torkelson posted a goal with two assists, while Sanseviro had two tallies. Sanseviro also posted a pair of caused turnovers. Rookie midfielder Kali Ringler had three ground balls and a caused turnover, while sophomore attack Lola Wright and classmate/defender Riley Kelly each had two draw controls. In goal, sophomore Lauren Johns shouldered the loss, recording two saves over 21:55 of action. Senior Jackie Molloy came on for 32:40 of relief, making seven saves, while rookie Bree MacMullen played the final 5:25 and was not forced to make any saves.

Clarkson owned a 32-21 advantage in shots and a 24-16 shots on goal margin as well. The Golden Knights also posted a 17-14 edge in ground balls and a 14-9 advantage on the draw control. The Brewers were 13-of-18 on the clear, while the Golden Knights were 14-of-17.

Vassar returns to action on Friday in a 4pm game at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, while Clarkson is at Skidmore on Friday, also for a 4pm Liberty League match.
