ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Vassar baseball team dropped both games in Saturday's Liberty League doubleheader against Rochester. The Brewers fell 4-7 in the first game and then lost 3-6 in the second. Vassar falls to 7-11 overall and 1-4 in the conference with the losses. Meanwhile, Rochester rises to 15-4 and 5-0 in the league.
The Yellowjackets built up to a 0-4 lead through the first two innings in game one. The action slowed down in the successive two frames, with only one batter reaching a base. At the top of the fifth, Vassar got on the board when Andrew Kanellis (Burke, VA) led off with a double down the left-field line. Ty Murray (Lenexa, KS) singled to right field, bringing Kanellis to be third. Bryce Grathwohl (Cutchogue, NY) flew out into a double play, but Kanellis was able to reach home to make it 1-4.
Rochester responded with three more runs in the bottom of the fifth, with Joseph Rende hitting a home run to center field to bring in two runs.
At the top of the eighth, Sam Brinster rocketed a home run to left-center field to cut the lead to 3-7. Adam Talwalkar (Lexington, KY) betted next and hit a home run in the same direction to make it a three-run game.
Vassar had a final chance in the ninth, but a Rochester double play ended any comeback.
After the third inning, Vassar took a 2-1 lead in the second game. A Brinster double in the second brought Ricardo Reyna (San Antonio, TX) home. Ezra Caspi (Holmdel, NJ) hit a double to bring Reid Lapekas (McKinney, TX) in for another run.
Rochester tied it 2-2 in the fourth following a Jacob Matzat triple to bring Reed home. The Yellowjackets took a 2-5 lead in the fifth. Vassar tacked on one more run in the sixth, but Rochester held on for the sweep.
Vassar and Rochester play again tomorrow at noon.
