Solid Effort Powers Men's Tennis Past SLU

Brewers post 7-2 win over Saints in Liberty League action

CANTON, NY – Powered by a strong singles effort and wins in two of three doubles matches, the Vassar College men's tennis team posted a 7-2 win over St. Lawrence University in Liberty League action on Saturday. The Brewers move to 8-6 overall and 4-2 in league play, while the Saints are now 7-8 and 3-4 in the Liberty League.

Doubles action saw the Saints open with the 1-0 edge as Nico Haet and John Hill-Edgar recorded an 8-4 win over Vassar sophomore Arun Guruswamy and rookie James Balon from three. The Brewers battled back, tying things at 1-1 as sophomores Jay Wong and Benjamin Almquist powered their way to an 8-6 victory at two against Adam Heilbronner and Edvin Strandberg.

Vassar wrapped up doubles play at one as senior Mathew Yee and rookie Arnav Agostinho bested Nathan Turtledove and Ben Moolman by an 8-6 margin for the 2-1 advantage going into singles.

Wong opened singles action with a 6-3, 7-6 win for the Brewers, taking down Turtledove at one. Next off court was Agostinho, who made it a 4-1 advantage for the visitors with a hard-fought 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 win over Strandberg from four.

The Brewers sealed the match win at five as senior Mihajlo Ivanovic recorded a 7-6 (7-3), 4-6, 6-3 victory over Heilbronner for the 5-1 advantage. Next off was Almquist, who powered his way to a 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) win against Haet.

From six, the Saints picked up their second point as Hill-Edgar posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over VC sophomore Nihal Kothari, but match play concluded at two as Yee gutted out a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Moolman for the final 7-2 score.

Vassar is back on the court next Saturday when it hosts Union College at Josselyn Courts. Action is set to begin at 12pm.
