POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – An outstanding singles effort propelled the Vassar College women's tennis team to a come-from-behind, 5-4 win over Skidmore College in Liberty League action on Saturday. The 32nd-ranked Brewers improve to 13-2 and 6-0 in league play, while the 23rd-ranked Thoroughbreds are now 9-3 and 6-1 in the Liberty League.
The match – which saw the Brewers facing a 4-1 deficit at one point – marks the first win by Vassar over Skidmore since April 2, 2016 when VC posted a 5-4 win.
Today's action, which began at Josselyn Courts, saw the Brewers open with a win as senior
Melina Stavropoulos and sophomore
Sofie Shen combined for an 8-1 win over Skidmore's duo of Audrey SooHoo and Lily Feldman at the first flight.
The Thoroughbreds tied things up from three as Konika Dhull and Sofia Carlsson posted an 8-4 win over Vassar rookie
Elyse Duley and senior
Cara Kizilbash. The final match from two went in favor of the visitors as Grace Truong and Ella Provost edged junior
Tatum Blalock and rookie
Macey Dowd, 8-6 for the 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Skidmore made it a 3-1 advantage as Provost posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kizilbash from five, while Feldman pushed the visitors to a 4-1 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win against Dowd at two. Vassar battled back beginning at the first flight as Blalock posted a 6-4, 6-4 win over Katherine Almquist to close the deficit to 4-2. Duley was next off court, notching a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 win over Chanhtel Thongphok for a 4-3 score in favor of Skidmore.
With the final two singles matches still on court, mother nature unleashed a rain storm, forcing play to continue in Walker Field House. Stavropoulos battled Truong at four, powering her way to a 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 win to tie the match at 4-all.
Soon after, Shen earned the Brewers the match victory from three against Dhull, battling back for a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 win.
Vassar returns to the court next Saturday when it welcomes Union to Josselyn Courts at 4pm.
