Vassar Pours on Runs in Win Against CCNY

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – On Wednesday afternoon, the Vassar baseball team rolled to a 22-3 win over CCNY in non-conference play. The Brewers used four innings with five runs to secure the win and move to 10-13 overall, while the Beavers slipped to 3-15. 12 Vassar betters recorded hits as the Brewers set a team-high with 19.

CCNY batted first and took a 0-1 lead after Eric Romero singled to center field. A throwing error by the shortstop allowed Thomas DiBlasi to reach home. Vassar first-year pitcher Pat Kerrigan struck out the following batter to keep it a one-run game.

At the bottom of the frame, sophomore Reid Lapekas stole third and reached home after an Ezra Caspi sacrifice fly. Sophomore Jaden Millstein doubled in Andrew Kanellis and Bryce Grathwohl to make it 3-1. The Brewers loaded the bases, and freshman Birch Herring-Jackson and Lapekas were hit by pitches to force two more runs home.

The Beavers could not respond, and the Brewers recorded another five-run inning in the second. Caspi scored when the CCNY pitcher walked the batter with the bases loaded, and then first-year Marc Milano tripled to center field to bring in three runs. Herring-Jackson singled in Milano to make it 10-1.

Vassar carried its momentum into the third with five more runs. After Caspi led off with a double, Kanellis hit a home run to left field to put the Brewers up 12-1. Another walk brought Alex Warren home, and Lapekas singled down the left-field line to add two more runs.

The action got quieter with no runs scored until the sixth inning. First-year Daniel Laderman led off a double before Ty Murray knocked a home run to make it 17-1. Michael Lee hit a double to push the lead to 19-1, and the Brewers tacked on one more before the third out.

CCNY scored two runs in the eighth, but the deficit was too much to overcome.

Kerrigan (3-1) pitched 5.0 innings with seven hits, one run, one walk, and six strikeouts. Milano went 3-of-4 with two runs and four RBI, while Warren scored five runs.

Vassar returns to league play on Friday when they play at Skidmore at 4 p.m.
