SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – After trailing 0-3, the Vassar baseball team cut the lead to one run, but Skidmore scored in the next three innings to secure the 3-9 win on Friday afternoon. The Brewers fall to 10-14 and 2-7 in the Liberty League. Skidmore stays atop the east division at 19-3-1 and 8-1 in the conference.
Vassar took a quick three outs in their first at-bat, and then Skidmore took a 0-1 lead in the bottom of the first. After senior Sam Brinster struck out Danny Melino, Skidmore's Jackson Hornung hit a home run to left-center field. Brinster stayed strong and struck out two more batters in the second inning to keep it a one-run game.
The Brewers could only muster two hits until the sixth inning, and a Jaden Millstein double brought Ezra Caspi home and put Nick Greenhawt on third. Junior Bryce Grathwohl walked to load the bases. Junior Adam Talwalkar picked up a walk to bring Greenhawt in for the run to cut the game to 2-3.
Hornung responded with a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 2-5. In the seventh, Vassar tacked on one more run when Andrew Kanellis doubled in Caspi.
One more Thoroughbreds' run in the seventh and three more in the eighth secured the win for Skidmore.
Vassar was limited to five hits, with Reid Lapekas going 2-for-4. Skidmore recorded nine hits.
Brinster (1-1) went 4.1 innings with three strikeouts and two hits. Skidmore's Jack Clark picked up the win and pitched 5.2 innings with three hits and four strikeouts. Christian Geresi earned the save and struck out five batters.
Vassar continues the series against Skidmore tomorrow at Prentiss Field for a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m.
