LOS ANGELES, CA - Powered by a doubles sweep and four of six singles victories, the Vassar College women's tennis team defeated Occidental College, 7-2 in action on Tuesday afternoon. The Brewers - winners of six straight dual matches - remains perfect at 6-0 on the season, while the Tigers move to 1-5 overall.
Doubles action saw the Brewers open with a win at third doubles as senior captain
Cara Kizilbash and rookie
Elyse Duley notched an 8-3 win over Emma Silber and Mathilde Depery. Vassar went up 2-0 at two as junior
Tatum Blalock and rookie
Macey Dowd defeated Dana Edson and Alexis Matabuena, 8-5, while senior captain
Melina Stavropoulos and sophomore
Sofie Shen made it a 3-0 advantage for the visitors at one with an 8-7 (7-3) win against Andei Fukushige and Sarah Fleming.
Singles action saw the Tigers gain their first point as Fukushige bested Blalock at one by a 6-1, 6-1 margin. The Brewers made it a 4-1 lead with a win at five as Kizilbash recorded a 6-1, 6-1 win against Depery and VC secured the match win from three soon after as Dowd took down Matabuena, 6-1, 6-4.
Stavropoulos was next off court for the Brewers, notching a 6-2, 6-4 win against Silber at four, while Occidental gained a point from two as Fleming defeated Shen, 6-3, 6-3. Fresh off her exciting third-set tiebreaker the night before, Duley once again made it a third-set thriller, posting a 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 win over Katie Wolber at six.
Vassar returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Pasadena for a 2pm (PST) match against CalTech.
