Duley Powers Women's Tennis Past Cal Lutheran

Brewers rookie wins in third-set tiebreaker to defeat Regals, 5-4

THOUSAND OAKS, CA - Rookie Elyse Duley won a third-set tiebreaker to lead the Vassar College women's tennis team to a 5-4 victory over California Lutheran University on Monday afternoon at the Poulson Tennis Center. The Brewers remain perfect on the dual meet season with a 5-0 mark, while the Regals are now 4-2 overall.

Tied 4-4, the match all came down to Duley versus CLU sophomore Lauren Sebastian, who won the opening set by a 6-3 margin. In the second set, Duley battled back, winning four straight games to take the second set by a 6-4 margin. In the third set, the Brewers rookie fought off two match points, prevailing in the tiebreaker by a 7-6 (7-3) margin to secure the Vassar win.

The match opened with Cal Lutheran grabbing the 2-1 lead following doubles action. The Regals pairing of Mari Bufkin and Brennan Foreman bested VC senior captain Melina Stavropoulos and sophomore Sofie Shen, 8-3 from one. CLU gained the 2-0 lead with a win at three as Heidi Levanan and Joslin Seaberg defeated Duley and senior captain Cara Kizilbash, 8-5.

Vassar secured its first point at two as junior Tatum Blalock and rookie Macey Dowd combined for an 8-6 win over Carolina Hinojosa and Luisa Garcia,

Sincgles action got underway with the homestanding Regals taking a 4-1 lead. From two, Foreman defeated Shen, 6-1, 6-2, followed by a win from Bufkin at one against Blalock, 6-3, 6-1.

Facing elimination, the Brewers rebounded in a big way, gaining a point from five as Kizilbash bested Hinojosa, 6-1, 6-4. Three saw a 6-2, 6-2 victory to move the match score to 4-3 as Down defeated Sophia Gawrit. Stavropoulos then tied things with a hard-fought 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 win over Garcia to set up the match decision at six.

Vassar continues spring break action on Tuesday, squaring-off against Occidental College at 1pm (PST).
