Women's Lacrosse Defeated at Babson

Strong opening half powers Beavers to 15-5 win over Brewers

BABSON PARK, MA – Capitalizing on a strong opening half, Babson defeated Vassar, 15-5 in non-league women's lacrosse action on Sunday afternoon at MacDowell Field. The Beavers move to 2-0 on the season, while the Brewers slip to 1-2 overall.

Babson took advantage in the opening half of action, powered by a quick start goal from freshman attack Amelia Novitch, that saw the Beavers take a 3-0 lead following the first quarter of play. The Beavers continued to answer in the second quarter, taking a 6-0 lead, including another by Novitch.

It was the 2:59 mark that saw the Brewers able to get past Beavers goalie Kathleen Murphy. Senior defender Maya Barrett-Tzannes charged down the far side, flipping a pass to junior attack Kateri Sanseviro, who drove in fast in the goal mouth for the first Vassar goal of the day.

Less than a minute later, the Beavers answered once again as Novitch converted her third of the contest at 2:15 for the 7-1 lead in the second stanza. Vassar had a chance to gain another score, but junior midfielder Maddy Kretten's free position attempt to the right couldn't find the angle, as time expired sending the teams to halftime.

Third quarter action opened with a goal for the Brewers as senior captain Ashley Roberts converted on the free position at 14:22 following a yellow card call against the home team. Her shot went up and over Murphy to move her to 3-for-5 on the season on free position attempts.

Babson once again charged back at the 11:50 mark as junior attack Anna Katherine Sypniewski converted another score off a feed from classmate and fellow attack Erin Jayne – her third helper of the contest – for the 8-2 Bason lead. The Beavers made it a seven-goal lead seconds later as Jayne scored another, driving across the goal mouth for a high shot over sophomore goalie Lauren Johns.

Vassar rebounded as sophomore middie Livia Shine picked up the ground ball following a Trina Chou caused turnover, fed the ball up the field. Following the successful clear, Sanseviro buried it, closing the gap to 9-3 at the 9:56 mark of the frame.

It would be Sanseviro once again just over a minute later, converting on the free position to make it a five-goal game (9-4) in favor of the home team. Despite that momentum, Babson made it a 3-for-3 on the free position for the game as junior midfielder Claudia Dodge drove one home for a 10-4 lead at 5:16.

The Brewers got one back before the end of the quarter as Roberts sent an outstanding pass to Sanseviro to pull Vassar back within six (11-5) heading into the final quarter of play.

Babson added three free position goals, along with the fifth tally of the game from Novitch in the final stanza and despite several strong shots, including ones from rookies Kali Ringler and Margaret Norsworthy-Edghill, Murphy held on for victory.

The Beavers were paced by Novitch, who also had two ground balls. Jayne added three goals and three assists, while Dodge had two goals with five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Sypniewski had two goals and an assist, while three others added scores as well. In goal, Murphy finished with 10 saves in the victory.

For Vassar, Sanseviro led the way with four goals, while Roberts finished with the goal and an assist. Kretten posted a game-high four draw controls with a caused turnover, while Chou notched three ground balls with three caused turnovers and two draw controls, while Ringler added two ground balls, two draws and two caused turnovers. In the Brewers' goal, sophomore Lauren Johns took over with 48 seconds left in the opening quarter, playing 40:23 total with five saves. Senior Jakie Molloy played the opening 14:12, while rookie Bree MacMullen came on for the final 5:25 of the game.

Vassar is now idle until March 15, when it returns from spring break with a 4pm contest at Manhattanville College. Babson hosts Wesleyan on Wednesday at 5pm.
