POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Senior captain
Ashley Roberts fired in a brilliant pass from junior
Annie Uyeki and the Vassar College women's lacrosse team made the goal stand as they defeated the United States Coast Guard Academy, 10-9 on Friday at Weinberg Turf Field. The win moves the Brewers to 1-1 on the season, while the Bears are now 1-2 overall.
Trailing by an 8-5 margin late in the third quarter, the Brewers mounted a comeback that began at the 2:54 mark of the frame as junior attack
Kateri Sanseviro converted a pass from teammate
Maddy Kretten to cut the deficit to 8-6. Kretten furthered the margin just over a minute later, banking in her second of the contest to make it a one-goal game.
The two teams then found themselves locked in an 8-8 battle to open the fourth quarter as sophomore attack
Yael Gelman went coast-to-coast across the goal mouth, firing in the tying score unassisted. It would be Kretten at 14:08, less than 50 seconds after the tying goal, dropping in the team's ninth of the game off a feed from Uyeki for the Vassar lead.
Coast Guard could not be held off for long as junior attack Brenda Anderson sent in her third of the contest at the 11:39 mark to once again make it a tie (9-9) game. Both teams had their chances throughout the remainder of the frame, but it was the Brewers finding the scoreboard late. Carrying the ball into the offensive zone, Uykei came down the far side and ran right toward the right post. Taking a few steps back, she found the space, flipped it over a defender's head to Roberts, who fired the shot home past sophomore goalie Devon McCue.
Vassar, which held a 31-24 advantage in shots for the contest, saw Uyeki finished with a game-high three goals and two assists for five points. She posted seven shots, five on goal, adding a ground ball and a caused turnover. Kretten also had a game-best three goals, posting a helper with four shots (three on goal). She also had a ground ball, a caused turnover and a game-high five draw controls. Junior midfielder
Trina Chou had a goal with a ground ball, a caused turnover and four draw controls, while Gelman, Roberts and Sanseviro each added a goal. Sophomore
Lauren Johns earned the victory for the Brewers, recording four saves in 30 minutes of second half action. Senior

Coast Guard was led by a game-high three goals from Anderson and junior attack Gianna Cascio. Anderson, who also had two assists, saw all five of her shots go on goal, while adding three ground balls, while Cascio had four shots all go on goal with a draw control. Junior defensive midfielder Olivia Oyola had a ground ball with a caused turnover and three draw controls, while rookie midfielder Kira Howard added a goal and an assist with three draw controls. Junior middie Shannon Schmidt finished with two assists, while in goal, McCue took the loss with six saves.
Vassar returns to the field on Sunday when it travels to Babson Park, Mass., for a 2pm tilt against the Beavers of Babson College.
