Women's Lacrosse Bested by Skidmore, 13-6

Brewers unable to hold off Thoroughbreds in second half

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – A strong second half effort helped lead the Skidmore women's lacrosse team to a 13-6 victory over Vassar College in Liberty League action on Wednesday. The Thoroughbreds improve to 2-5 overall and 2-1 in league play, while the Brewers are now 3-5 and 1-2 in the Liberty League.

Vassar got the game scoring going at 7:45 of the opening quarter as rookie Kali Ringler buried a feed from junior Maddy Kretten. The lead was erased with two minutes to play as Skidmore's Lily Schwartzman and Danielle Kilburn went back-to-back to give the visitors the 2-1 lead.

Rookie Madison Bouggess pulled things even to open the second quarter, but Skidmore responded with three goals, including another from Schwartzman on the free position to open a 5-2 advantage with 8:27 left in the quarter. Consecutive goals from Kretten helped cut the margin to 5-4 heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Thoroughbreds once again struck quickly as Jillian Lockwood and Gabriella Modesti each fired in a shot to make it a 7-4 contest. Kretten cut the deficit once more at the 7:25 mark, but Skidmore found the net twice soon after, regaining a four-goal (9-5) advantage.

Kretten found the back of the net for her fourth of the game at 5:04 of the third quarter but the visitors saw Elizabeth Walsh notch a goal to end the scoring in the stanza. Fourth quarter action belonged to the Thoroughbreds as Camille Pontone came off the bench for three straight tallies to seal the victory.

Skidmore was paced by Pontone, while Modesti added two goals and an assist. Schwartzman had two tallies with two draw controls as Avery Geddes added a goal, an assist and a team-high three draw controls. Kilburn added two goals an a helper, while Lockwood posted a goal with a game-best three assists. Liv Kazanjian earned the win in goal, recording 14 saves.

For Vassar, Kretten led all players with four goals on the afternoon. She also posted six shots, a ground ball and two caused turnovers. Ringler added a goal, while Bougess had a tally and a ground ball to go along with a game-high eight draw controls. Sophomore Lauren Johns shouldered the loss for Vassar, recording nine saves overall.

Vassar owned a 31-29 advantage in shots for the game, also recording a 13-10 edge in draw controls. Skidmore paced the effort in ground balls, 17-12 and went a near-perfect 20-of-21 on the clear. The Brewers were 15-of-19 on the clear.

The Brewers return to action on Saturday when they host Clarkson at 12pm on Weinberg Turf Field. The Thoroughbreds are also back in league play on Saturday, traveling to William Smith for a 1pm game.
