POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Vassar baseball team used an 11-run second inning to pick up its seventh win of the season Wednesday afternoon. The Brewers went on to win 13-4 and move to 7-9 overall, while the Panthers fall to 4-13.
Old Westbury struck first in the top of the first. Oscar Fajardo and Jacob Taormina singled to bring in a pair of runs, and the Panthers led 0-2. At the bottom of the first, Old Westbury fielded a double play to end a Vassar response quickly.
At the bottom of the second, junior Andrew Kanellis (Burke, VA) singled through the left side and then stole second. Junior Greenhawt (Heber City, UT) was walked before the next batter fouled out. The Brewers loaded the bases when the Panthers pitched walked Sam Brinster (Long Beach, CA). The Brewers scored the subsequent three runs on walks, and then a balk made it 4-2. The next three Brewers were walked to push the lead to 7-2, and a wild pitch allowed Ezra Caspi (Holmdel, NJ) to score.
Vassar finally scored off a hit when Bryce Grathwohl (Cutchogue, NY) doubled to right-center and reached third on a fielding error to bring Greenhawt and Kanellis home. Junior Adam Talwalkar (Lexington, KY) added one more run when he hit a sacrifice fly to the right field, allowing Grathwohl to score and make it 11-2.
First-year Pat Kerrigan (Jamison, PA) struck out two batters in the third and one more in the fourth. Old Westbury's Jacob Ford hit a home run to left field at the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 11-3. At the bottom of the frame, sophomore Reid Lapekas (McKinney, TX) singled and stole second. A Grathwohl single allowed Lapekas to reach home.
In the seventh inning, Vassar added two more runs when sophomore Jaden Millstein (Margate, NJ) doubled to the right side for two RBI.
Millstein and Grathwohl paced the Brewers with nearly identical stat lines. Both went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two walks, and one run.
Kerrigan (2-1) went 5.0 innings with six strikeouts, five hits, and three runs.
Vassar next plays Rochester in a doubleheader on Sat. Apr. 2 at noon.
