POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – In one of the most exciting weekend series, the Vassar baseball team fell 5-6 to St. Lawrence on Sunday evening. The Brewers and Saints began the day, continuing yesterday's second game of the doubleheader with Vassar winning 11-10, and the teams jumped right into the scheduled contest.
The Brewers now stand at 6-9 overall and 1-2 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence moves to 9-4 and 2-1 in the conference.
The game remained scoreless until the fourth inning, and the Brewers used some solid fielding to keep the Saints off the board. Vassar struck first when junior Andrew Kanellis (Burke, VA) led off the fourth with a single to left field. He then advanced to second on a passed ball and reached third when Ty Murray (Lenexa, KS) grounded out to the shortstop. First-year, Ricardo Reyna (San Antonio, TX) used a sacrifice bunt to bring Kanellis home before the Saints closed out the inning.
At the bottom of the fourth, St. Lawrence's Jake Delaney hit into a double play where Reyna threw to Reid Lapekas (McKinney, TX) to get out Andrew Circelli and then passed to Murray at first for the second out. Lapekas grounded out Drew Courtwright to keep it 1-0.
Vassar added two runs in the sixth. The Saints' pitcher misread a Reyna bunt, and the first-year was able to reach first and bring Kanellis home. Murray picked up a run when junior Adam Talwalkar (Lexington, KY) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to put the Brewers ahead 3-0.
St. Lawrence used a four-run seventh inning to take the lead. Nicholas Butler singled in two runs, and Delaney singled in two more.
Vassar tied 4-4 in the eighth after Jack Story (Marietta, GA) stole home, but two Saints' runs in the bottom of the frame made it 4-6. The Brewers had one more shot in the ninth, and Ezra Caspi (Holmdel, NJ) used a sacrifice bunt to put runners on second and third. Kanellis was intentionally walked to load the bases. Story hit on a fielder's choice, which brought Millstein in for the score, but Vassar struck out swinging to end at 5-6.
Junior Bryce Grathwohl (Cutchogue, NY) and senior Sam Brinster (Long Beach, NY) each pitched 3.0 innings and gave up no runs. Grathwohl struck out one batter with two hits, while Brinster had three hits. St. Lawrence's Chris Mingione went 5.1 innings with six hits, three runs, and five strikeouts.
Vassar is back home on Wed. Mar. 30 to play Old Westbury at 4 p.m.
