Fourth Quarter Comeback Falls Short for Women's Lacrosse

Brewers late rally falls short in 17-15 loss to University of Rochester

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – The Vassar College women's lacrosse team shouldered a tough 17-15 loss to the University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon, despite a late fourth quarter drive in the closing minutes. The Yellowjackets earned the Liberty League victory on Weinberg Turf, moving to 4-3 overall and 2-2 in league action. The homestanding Brewers are now 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the Liberty League.

Rochester withstood a furious Vassar College rally in the fourth quarter as the Brewers turned a 16-9 lead for the visitors into a 17-15 game in the final 6:57 of the frame. Rookie attack Reilly Mulcahy got the rally going, converting a pass from senior midfielder Ashley Roberts. Junior attack Annie Uyeki answered less than two minutes later, firing in a pass from classmate Kateri Sanseviro at 5:10.

Sanseviro then capitalized on the free position to make it a 16-12 score for the Yellowjackets, while rookie attack Madison Bouggess followed with 2:32 to play, converting on the free position for her first collegiate goal.

Rochester grabbed an insurance goal at the 1:46 mark as rookie attack Gracie Giannettino scored her 24th of the season off a feed from classmate Mia Perkell, but the Brewers fought for possession after that, capitalizing as junior midfielder Maddy Kretten scored an a driving shot up the middle with 26 seconds to go.

The Brewers earned the win off the draw as Bougess surged forward to scoop it up as the home team drove toward the net. Following a Rochester foul, Vassar was awarded a free position attempt, which was converted by Mulcahy for her 13th of the year, but it wasn't enough time left for the Brewers to pull even.

Rochester saw Giannettino score six goals with one assist, while Perkell had four goals and one assist. Grace Crochiere had three goals with two helpers, Brooke Fiannaca added two goals and an assist, while Anne Traczyk dropped in two goals. Lucy Haggerty added three assists. Kate Lindsey posted a game-best eight ground balls with a game-high five caused turnovers, while Grace Crochiere had three goals, two assists three ground balls and a game-high six draw controls. In goal, Ava Saffren made eight saves for the victory.

Vassar was paced by Kretten, who had five goals. Uyeki added two goals with three assists, while Roberts posted two goals of her own with a helper. Mulcahy added two scores and an assist with four caused turnovers, while rookie midfielder Kali Ringler had two goals, adding a game-best six draw controls and three ground balls. Bouggess had a goal with three ground balls and four draw controls. In goal, sophomore Lauren Johns suffered the loss, recording three saves in 37:15 of play. Senior starter Jackie Molloy played the opening quarter, recording one stop, while rookie Bree MacMullen played the final 7:45 of the contest and did not make a stop.

VC owned a 30-26 advantage in shots, also going a near perfect 16-of-18 on the clear for the game. The Yellowjackets owned a 15-of-23 margin on the clear, also going 4-of-6 in free position attempts. It was an even split in ground balls (24-24) and draw controls (18-18) for the contest.

The Brewers return to action on Wednesday, welcoming Skidmore to Weinberg Turf for a 5pm league tilt. The Yellowjackets are also in action Wednesday in league play, hosting Ithaca at 4pm.
