Men's Tennis Concludes West Coast Trip With Victory

Brewers defeat Whittier by an 8-1 margin on Saturday

WHITTIER, CA - It was a victorious day of tennis for the Vassar men's tennis team, which powered its way to an 8-1 win at Whittier College on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers move to 4-5 on the season behind a number of outstanding efforts. The Poets are now 1-2 on the season.

Doubles action saw the Brewers gain a 2-1 lead in the match, posting victories at two and three. Sophomores Benjamin Almquist and Jay Wong picked up a hard-fought win from two, besting Ahmed Amer and Rafael Maniego, 8-7 (7-2).

Three saw senior Mihajlo Ivanovic and sophomore Arun Guruswamy record an 8-5 victory over Mason Lebby and Kieran Carroll, while the Poets picked up the marathon win at one as Pim van der Veer and Spencer Cinco earned an 8-7 (7-4) win over Brewers senior Mathew Yee and rookie Arnav Agostinho.

Singles action saw several other marathon matches for the Brewers. Vassar gained point at five as Ivanovic powered his way to a 6-1, 6-2 win against Amer. Vassar made it a 4-1 lead as Almquist defeated van der Veer by a 6-0, 6-3 score. Wong secured the Brewers match victory at two with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Carroll.

Vassar then saw an incredible match from one as Yee and Cinco squared off. The Poets top player opened with a 7-6 (7-3) win, but Yee battled back in the second set, even saving match point while down 4-5 to go on to a 7-6 (7-4) win. The Brewers senior then powered his way to victory in the third-set, winning the tiebreaker 11-9 for the first flight victory.

Next up from four was Guruswamy, who posted a 7-5, 6-3 win over Prayag Ahire, while the match concluded at six as sophomore Nihal Kothari earned the victory. After posting a 7-6 (7-3) win in the opening set, he led 3-1 before his opponent retired.

Vassar will be back on the court on March 26 when it travels to the Coast Guard Academy for a 1pm match in New London, CT.
