Men's Lacrosse Prevails in Season Opener Against Montclair State

Brewers post 15-12 win in first-ever victory over Red Hawks

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Powered by a game-high four goals from sophomore Troy Santise, along with goals from eight others, the Vassar men's lacrosse team posted a 15-12 victory over Montclair State University in the season opener for both teams at Weinberg Turf. The Brewers are now 1-0 on the young season with the win - which marked their first-ever against the Red Hawks in seven previous meetings. Montclair State is now 0-1 overall.

The visiting Red Hawks opened the game's scoring as junior attack Mike McCreery buried a feed from senior midfielder Matt Dancsecs at the 3:55 mark of the opening quarter. The goals came fast and furious soon after as Vassar scored 30 seconds later with rookie midfielder Van Ledermann notching his first career goal off a pass from senior captain Logan Hyde, followed by a tally at 2:24 by senior captain Connor Deehan from Santise to give the Brewers a 2-1 advantage. Santise earned his first goal with just 31 seconds remaining, buring a feed from sophomore Ryan Metz and as the clock flipped to the second quarter, he tacked on back-to-back tallied in the opening four minutes to put the Brewers up by a 5-1 margin.

Dancsecs closed the gap at the 9:58 mark for the visitors (5-2), but three straight tallies set the Brewers up by an 8-2 margin with 5:22 to play in the second stanza. Montclair State added another tally with 2:30 to play, but sophomore Ian Zumpano sent the game into halftime as he buried a shot from junior attack Riley Olds - who scored in the three-goal stretch earlier - to put Vassar up 9-3.

The visiting Red Hawks turned a page in the third quarter as Dancsecs scored early in the frame. Olds scored on the man-up, but four straight goals - including one that carried into the fourth period - saw Montclair State close the gap to 10-8 in favor of the Brewers. Senior captain Logan Hyde dropped in an unassisted score at the 11:28 mark, but three straight goals, including back-to-back scores from junior midfielder Tyler McCreery, knotted the game at 11-all with 7:07 to play.

Vassar quickly rebounded, beginning at 6:06 as junior captain James Nicholas buried an Olds feed, followed by an unassisted tally from Olds - his third of the game - to give the Brewers a 13-11 cushion. Hyde added his second of the quarter at 3:59 and despite Dancsecs fourth goal of the game seconds later, Santise dropped in his fourth of the contest to make it a three-goal game, sealing the win with 59 seconds to play.

In addition to Santise, who added two assists for six total points with five ground balls and a caused turnover, the Brewers saw Olds record three goals with two assists for five points. He also added two ground balls. Hyde had two goals with a helper, while Nicholas, Zumpano, Metz, Deehan, Ledermann and sophomore Jon Bradbury each had one tally. Junior Dillon Dierman went 5-for-9 from the face-off circle with five ground balls and a caused turnover, while sophomore Thomas Cameron also had five ground balls while going 8-of-11 from the circle. In goal, junior Aidan Gallagher earned the victory with 11 saves on the evening.
