PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Vassar men's squash team opened action at the 2022 College Squash Association (CSA) Team National Championships on Friday with a pair of matches to begin play in the Conroy Cup Division. The Brewers – who are now 6-11 on the season – shouldered a tough 8-1 loss to Haverford, before falling 9-0 to Hobart in the evening finale.
In the opening match against Haverford, rookie
Rithik Jalali fell by an 11-8, 11-4, 11-3 margin to Quinton Ayres Crawford from the top of the ladder. Junior
Sameer Mustafa suffered a tough 14-12, 11-2, 11-3 loss to Noah Tunis at two, while senior
Henry Mitchell fell by an 11-4, 8-11, 11-1, 11-3 margin to Peter Lehv at three.
From four, rookie
Patrick Looby dropped an 11-2, 11-6, 11-6 decision to Minor Reedich, while five saw senior
Max Swan fall 11-3, 11-3, 11-3 to Benjamin Schiltz. At six, senior captain
Alex Wisneski fell 11-6, 11-2, 11-4 to John Collins, while freshman
Jarid Haslinger shouldered an 11-6, 11-6, 11-8 loss to Alden Weinberg at seven.
From eight, senior captain
Reese Collins fell by a tough 12-10, 11-6, 12-14, 11-9 margin, while rookie
Azaan Malik captured the team's lone point at nine after gutting out a hard-fought 8-11, 8-11, 11-4, 11-8, 11-5 win against Zadoc Bond.
In the second match against Hobart, Jalali fell 11-4, 11-7, 11-6 to Hussein Labib at the top spot on the ladder. Two saw Mustafa fall 11-5, 11-1, 11-8 to Omar Kiwan, while three saw Mitchell shoulder an 11-1, 11-4, 11-2 loss to Mohamed Abdelhafez.
From four, Looby fell 11-2, 11-2, 11-5 to Joey Raskin Lantos, while Swan suffered an 11-2, 11-4, 11-4 loss to Giacomo Dalle Molle at five. Six saw Wisneski fall 11-1, 11-1, 11-2 to James Mazzarelli, while seven was an 11-7, 11-4, 11-5 defeat for Haslinger against Roberto Vega.
At eight, Collins fell 11-1, 11-4, 11-2 to Sayf Elhawary, while Malik rounded out the match results from nine with an 11-7, 11-4, 11-7 loss to Quran Davis.
The Brewers return to action on Saturday at 9am when they take on Fordham University in the 7-9 playoff. Vassar will play on courts 7, 8, and 9 at the University of Pennsylvania Courts. The Brewers are back in action after that on Sunday, facing Denison at 12:30pm at the Specter Center.
