ROCHESTER, NY - A dominant doubles effort set the tone for the Vassar men's tennis team to post a 7-2 victory over the University of Rochester on Sunday morning at the Goergen Athletic Center. With the win, the Brewers move to 1-1 on the season, while the Yellowjackets are now 0-1.
Opening the day in doubles action was a win by the second pairing of sophomores
Jay Wong and
Benjamin Almquist as the duo bested Kai Yuminaga and Kei Ogawa by an 8-1 margin. From three, senior
Mihajlo Ivanovic and sophomore
Arun Guruswamy gutted out an 8-7 (7-2) victory against Adrian Zhang and Kenneth Lee, while Vassar moved the margin to 3-0 as rookie
Arnav Agostinho and senior
Mathew Yee powered their way to an 8-7 (10-8) win over Pasquale Procaccino and Krish Vennam at one.
Singles action opened with a win at four from Ivanovic as he bested Ogawa, 6-3, 6-2 to move the score to 4-0. The Brewers sealed the win with a victory at the first flight as Wong came from behind for a 1-6, 6-4, 6-4 besting of Procaccino. From two, Vennam and Yee battled it out with Vennam posting a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory, while at five, Agostinho gave Vassar the 6-1 edge with a 6-3, 6-3 victory against Zhang.
Rochester picked up its second point as Yuminaga battled to a 2-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) win over Almquist, while the match wrapped up at six as Balon recorded a 6-4, 6-0 win against Lee.
The Brewers return to action next Saturday (2/19) when they open their spring home schedule against Skidmore College at 1pm in Walker Field House.
