Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – In their 2022 home debut, the Vassar men's tennis team shined with a 7-2 Liberty League victory over Skidmore College. The Brewers move to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in Liberty League play after posting their first regular season dual meet win over the Thoroughbreds since a 9-0 win on February 27, 2010.
Doubles action kicked things off as the Brewers opened a 2-1 advantage. The first flight pairing of senior
Mathew Yee and rookie
Arnav Agostinho powered their way to an 8-6 win over Skidmore juniors Sergiu Celebidachi and Alper Kulturel. Two was an 8-3 victory for Brewers' sophomore
Jay Wong and
Benjamin Almquist, who defeated sophomore Zachary Portnoy and rookie John Rado.
The Thoroughbreds got on the board at three as seniors Tristan Thiebaut and Connor Biernat bested Vassar senior
Mihajlo Ivanovic and sophomore
Arun Guruswamy by an 8-4 margin.
In singles action, Skidmore earned the win from the first flight as Portnoy defeated Wong, 6-4, 6-3. Two saw Yee the victor as he posted an outstanding 6-2, 6-2 victory over Rado – who was the ITA Cup Singles National Champion this past fall.
Three was a 6-4, 6-0 win for Almquist over Kulturel, while at four, Agostinho posted a 7-5, 6-3 win over Celebidachi. At five, Ivanovic rebounded to grab the singles win, besting Thiebaut, 6-0, 6-2, while sophomore
Nihal Kothari was a 7-5, 6-4 winner over Biernat at six to close things out.
Vassar is back in action next weekend with a pair of matches. The Brewers travel to The College of New Jersey on Saturday for a 3:30pm tilt with the Lions, before returning home on Sunday for a 4pm Liberty League match against Bard at Walker Field House.
