ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, NY - It was an action packed day of action for the Vassar College men's squash team as it competed at the Bard College Round Robin on Saturday. The Brewers opened with back-to-back 8-1 wins over the host Raptors and the University of Connecticut, before finishing with a 9-0 victory over Swarthmore. The Brewers move to 3-2 on the season with the victories.
In the opener against the Raptors, the Brewers saw rookie
Razaan Lalji post a hard-fought 9-11, 11-9, 12-14, 11-7, 11-8 win over Martin Graham at two. Sophomore
Patrick Looby had an 11-2, 11-3, 11-2 win against Will Egan at three, followed by an 11-2, 11-2, 11-4 win for rookie
Luke Chen at four over Asa Kaplan. Sophomore
Jarid Haslinger then notched an 11-2, 11-1, 11-2 victory over Jacob Nathan from five, while six saw rookie
Kyle Benson with an 11-3, 11-0, 11-2 win over Ali Mounim Rajabi at six. Senior
Josh Finkelstein was an 11-0, 11-2, 11-0 winner over Mujtaba Naqib from seven and the Brewers posted default wins from eight and nine. Junior captain
Rithik Jalali shouldered a tough 7-11, 8-11, 11-4, 6-11 loss to Artemy Mukhim from the top of the ladder.
Match two against UConn saw senior captain
Sameer Mustafa record an 11-6, 11-2, 11-3 win against Sam Mason from two, followed by Lalji with an 11-5, 11-4, 11-6 win against Ali Fadhil at three. Four was a victory for Looby, who posted an 11-2, 11-7, 11-2 victory over Arun Polumbaum, while five saw Chen with an 11-2, 11-2, 11-1 win against Ryan Galdenzi. Haslinger picked up an 11-1, 11-0, 11-3 win over Phoebe Sanchez at six, while Benson was an 11-4, 11-2, 11-5 winner versus Ishaan Reddy at seven. Finkelstein was once again a winner in his match, besting Will Shostak, 11-7, 11-7, 11-7 from eight, while sophomore
Wyatt Kern posted a 6-11, 11-9, 11-6, 11-4 win against Colin Gorski from nine. The Huskies lone point came from one as Daniyal Athar won 11-9, 11-6, 11-8 over Jalali.
The final match of the day saw Haslinger post victory from the top of the ladder, defeating Paris Shan by an 11-2, 11-3, 11-2 margin. Benson bested Christian Bignotti from two by an 11-1, 11-4, 11-4 score, while three saw Finkelstein with an 11-1, 11-1, 11--2 win over Devyani Mahajan. Kern was an 11-2, 11-7, 11-2 winner from four over Owen Sears, while rookie
Matthew O'Leary was an 11-4, 11-4, 11-2 winner over Leo Sun from five. The Brewers picked up default wins at the sixth through ninth spots on the ladder.
Vassar's men's and women's squash teams are back in action next weekend when they host Connecticut College (11am) and Haverford College (3pm) at the Kenyon Squash Courts.
