Women's Soccer Plays to 1-1 Draw Against Skidmore

Young scores in 83rd minute on penalty kick against Thoroughbreds

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY - Senior captain Jessica Young scored a penalty kick in the 83rd minute to help Vassar to a 1-1 tie against Skidmore College in Liberty League women's soccer action on Saturday at Gordon Field. The Brewers are now 6-3-3 with a 2-1-1 mark in league play, while the Thoroughbreds move to 7-1-2 and 2-0-2 in the Liberty League.

After an opening half that saw the Brewers hold a 7-0 margin in shots for the first 45 minutes, it was the visiting Thoroughbreds that struck first as senior forward Isabella Nevin scored in the 55th minute. The Brewers defense worked to clear the ball in their own end, but a miscue saw Nevin gain control of the ball, dribbling forward as she drove a hard shot high and over the reach of Brewers keeper Teresa Zimmer for the 1-0 advantage.

The Brewers had a number of chances to net the equalizer, including a shot just two minutes later as senior captain Sydney MacDonald sent a through ball up to a speeding Ariana Pjetri. The junior forward fired in a shot that was scooped up by Skidmore goalie Claire Wolgast in front.

Vassar nearly got on the board again in the 71st minute as senior midfielder and captain Violet Munnelly banked in a shot that was saved and cleared.

In the 83rd minute the Brewers finally notched the equalizer as Skidmore was called for a handball penalty in the box. Vassar was awarded the penalty kick, which saw Young step up to take. The senior defender fired the ball into the right as Wolgast was unable to control it as it went in.

The Brewers continued to press late as MacDonald fired in another shot that Wolgast saved, while sophomore midfielder London Wilkes's wide shot caromed just out of play to conclude the action.

Vassar owned a dominate 21-3 advantage in shots for the contest, including a 10-1 margin on goal. The Brewers also owned a 5-0 edge in corner kicks as well.

In goal, Wolgast recorded nine saves, while Zimmer did not have any stops.

The Brewers continue their four-game homestand next weekend, welcoming Clarkson and St. Lawrence in Liberty League action on Friday (4pm) and Saturday (2pm), respectively on Gordon Field.
