Women's Soccer Falls to Clarkson in League Action

Golden Knights score in 78th minute enroute to 1-0 victory

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Rookie midfielder Lillian Gillett scored in the 78th minute as Clarkson University held on for the 1-0 victory over Vassar College in Liberty League women's soccer action on Friday evening on Gordon Field. The Golden Knights move to 6-5-2 overall and 1-3-1 in league action, while the Brewers are now 6-4-3 and 2-2-1 in the Liberty League.

A tough and defensive battle on the scoreboard was broken in the 78th minute as Clarkson got the go-ahead tally. Rookie Julia Tylar got the play started, sending in a long free kick from 15-yards ouside the box. The ball fell into a scrum in front as Vassar keeper Teresa Zimmer leaped up and knocked the ball away for the save. Too far out from the net, the ball fell behind her as Gillett battled with a Vassar defender, sending the ball in to the goal for the lead.

The Brewers nearly netted the equalizer five minutes later as senior captain Jessica Young drove a shot in on net that sophomore keeper Molly DiCaprio was able to save to keep it locked at 1-0. Less than a minute later, Brewers rookie Riley McGrath fired in a shot that DiCaprio dove to save and continue to keep the Golden Knights in the lead.

Vassar sophomore midfielder Noelle Namba had one last chance for the Brewers in the waining minutes of the contest, but DiCaprio was once again up to the task, making the stop - one of her six on the afternoon for the victory.

In the final numbers, the Brewers owned a 16-7 margin in shots, including a 6-4 edge on goal. Vassar also led 3-2 in corner kicks for the game. In goal, Zimmer finished with three saves.

Vassar returns to the pitch on Saturday, hosting St. Lawrence University on Gordon Field at 2pm.
