POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Sophomore
Leilani Llamas (Grapevine, TX) netted the game-winner in double overtime as the Vassar College Field Hockey team defeated #20 Cortland 2-1 in the soaking rain at Weinberg Field. The Brewers improve to 7-3 on the season with the victory.
The contest began as a defensive battle as the Red Dragons earned the lone shot attempt and penalty corner in the first quarter at the six and a half minute mark but the shot by Keira Ettere was blocked by the Vassar defense.
The Brewers first shot of the game came two minute into the second quarter as junior
Maggie Werner (Berkeley, CA) knocked home her fourth goal of the season on a cross from senior
Ella Pearl (San Francisco, CA) to give Vassar an early 1-0 lead. Vassar picked up its first corner of the game a few minutes later and the shot from Llamas was blocked in front by Cortland.
Cortland earned six penalty corners in the third quarter but were only able to get one shot on goal as junior goalkeeper
Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA) turned away Ettere to keep the 1-0 advantage after 45 minutes of play.
The Red Dragons picked up its eighth penalty corner of the game with just over three and half minutes left in regulation and Sydney Reinsch scored the equalizer for Cortland off the injection from Jamie Snyder.
In the first overtime, Cortland picked up three straight corners and Dumaresq made two big saves on Ettere and Madison Rice. Junior
Hailey Brigger (San Francisco, CA) got a good chance off a penalty corner but Red Dragons' goalkeeper Emma Morgan made a strong save to send it to double overtime.
Morgan made another save on Llamas just one minute into the second overtime period. Llamas made a strong defensive play just outside the arc and then worked her way into the middle and fired one past the Cortland goalkeeper to give the Brewers a double overtime victory three minutes into the period.
Llamas led the team in shots with three, including two on goal, as she tallied her fourth goal of the season. Werner also tallied her fourth goal of the season as Pearl earned her second assist. Dumaresq picked up her seventh win of the campaign and made three saves for Vassar.
Reinisch tallied the goal for the Red Dragons and Ettere led the team shots with four, including two on goal. Snyder picked up the assist off a penalty corner and Morgan earned the tough luck loss for Cortland as she made three saves.
Vassar returns to action on Saturday afternoon for Senior Day as the Brewers play host to Liberty League foe Union. The contest with the Dutchwomen is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Weinberg Field.
