Women's Soccer Defeats Ithaca on Senior Day

Munnelly scores game-winner as Brewers best Bombers, 1-0

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Powered by an early second half goal from senior captain Violet Munnelly, along with a strong defensive effort, the Vassar College women's soccer team posted a 1-0 win over Ithaca College in Liberty League regular season finale action on Saturday afternoon on Gordon Field. The victory, which also marked Senior Day, saw the Brewers improve to 8-4-5 and 4-2-3 in league play, while the Bombers are now 11-3-3 and 6-2-1 in the Liberty League.

After an opening half of action that was a primary defensive battle, Munnelly gave the Brewers the 1-0 advantage less than 23 seconds into the second frame. Junior midfielder Justine Tapert got the play going, battling past an Ithaca defender into the high left side of the box. Beating her cover, Tapert crossed it to Munnelly in the middle as she went one-on-one with the goalie, firing it into the right side of the goal.

Mid-way through the frame, the Bombers nearly got on the board as junior midfielder Kaitlyn Weis drove into the box for a one-on-one attempt with Brewers goalie Teresa Zimmer. Making her way in, Weis was diverted by an outstanding takeaway as junior Cate Greene flew in on the right, stealing the ball away and sending it out of the zone.

The Bombers nearly had another chance with less than three minutes to play as rookie defender Ali Amari barrelled in on goal. As she approached, three Brewers defenders surrounded her, able to get the ball away and negate the chance for the visitors.

For the game, the Brewers owned a narrow 7-6 edge in shots, including a 3-1 margin on goal. The Bombers had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

Zimmer recorded the victory, forced to make just one save on the afternoon, while her counterpart, Reader had two stops.

In addition to Munnelly, the Brewers also recognized seniors Adie Amore, Catherine Slaybaugh, Isabel Leinenweber and captain Sydney MacDonald in a pre-game ceremony.

Wi the win, the Brewers have secured the fifth see in the upcoming Liberty League Tournament and will travel to fourth-seeded RIT for a First Round match on Tuesday. Game time is yet to be determined.
