ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Powered by a two-goal second half effort, fourth-seeded RIT posted a 3-1 win over fifth-seeded Vassar in Liberty League Women's Soccer Quarterfinal action on Tuesday afternoon. The victory moves the Tigers to 12-3-2 on the season, while the Brewers conclude their tournament run with an 8-5-5 record.
The Tigers now advance to Friday's League Semifinal and will face top-seeded William Smith.
The homestanding Tigers opened the game's scoring in the eighth minute as Sam Halligan got control of the ball in the midfield off a Vassar player. Dribbling the ball up the field, she passed it to Emma Schock, who then dribbled up the left side. Making a final pass to the far side, Maidson Corso drove the ball into the left corner for the 1-0 advantage.
The Brewers got the equalizer in the 32nd minute after a free kick on the near side by junior defender
Jessica Young bounced around in the middle of the box. Touching several players from both teams, the ball came loose as Young barreled in, driving a high shot into the left corner past the RIT keeper.
In the second half of action, RIT was awarded a free kick after a foul by the Brewers. Halligan lined up for the shot, arching the ball around the Vassar wall and into the left corner past a diving
Teresa Zimmer in the 59th minute.
In the 64th minute, the Tigers were awarded a penalty kick following a takedown in the box. Halligan once again stepped up, sending a shot into the low right corner past the reach of a diving Zimmer to make it a 3-1 lead for RIT.
The Brewers had several quick attempts in the 70th minute as senior captain
Violet Munnelly saw her shot go just right, while junior
Ariana Pjetri's shot went high and outside seconds later.
Vassar was unable to put together another shot late as RIT's defense held solid over the closing minutes.
Freshman goalie Emily Sanchez earned the victory for the Tigers, making three saves on the afternoon. Zimmer shouldered the loss for the Brewers with one stop.
For the game, the Brewers owned a 12-6 advantage in shots, while both teams had four shots on goal. The teams were also locked in a 4-4 margin for corner kicks as well.
