Trunfio's Two Goals Leads Vassar to Win Over Scranton

Sophomore tallies her team-leading ninth and 10th goals of the season

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Sophomore Gianna Trunfio (Clinton, NY) tallied her team-leading ninth and 10th goals of the season as the Vassar College Field Hockey team defeated Scranton, 2-1, in non-conference action at Weinberg Field on Wednesday evening. The Brewers have won three straight and improve to 12-4 overall on the season.

Vassar picked up three penalty corners in the first quarter as the Brewers were the only team to record a shot. Scranton goalkeeper Clare Maguire turned away sophomore Max Meijjard's (Heemstede, The Netherlands) shot at the 9:59 mark to keep the game scoreless.

Just over one minute into the second quarter, senior Ella Pearl (San Francisco, CA) worked her way into the circle and made a nice feed to Trunfio in front of the goal and Trunfio buried it in the back of the net to give the Brewers an early 1-0 lead.

After two penalty corners for Scranton had a shot go wide, the Royals earned another corner with two and a half minutes to go as Katie Redding scored her 17th goal of the season following the injection from Lauren Franco to tie the match at one.

The Brewers recorded the only shot of the third quarter as senior Avery Bauman (Westbrook, CT) had a shot saved by Maguire to keep the contest tied heading into the final quarter of regulation.

Vassar found the game-winning goal just under four minutes into the final quarter when junior Maggie Werner (Berkeley, CA) had her shot saved by Maguire and Trunfio picked up the rebound and shot it past the Royals defense to take the 2-1 lead. The Vassar defense held the Royals without a shot after the deciding goal and earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory.

Trunfio's two goals move her to the team-lead with 10 while Pearl's assist was her fourth of the season. Junior Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA), Trunfio and Werner each had three shots for the Brewers in the contest.

Redding's goal was her 17th of the season and she had two of the three shots for the Royals on the night. Junior goalkeeper Sarah Dumaresq (Barnstable, MA) picked up her 12th victory of the season and made one save for Vassar. Maguire took the loss in goal for Scranton as she made five saves on the night.

Vassar held a 14-3 edge in shots on the night while also outshooting the Royals 7-2 on goal. The Brewers also held an advantage in penalty corners at 7-3.

The Brewers will play the regular season finale on Saturday evening as Vassar will host New Paltz in non-conference action. The contest with the Hawks is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Weinberg Field.
