Field Hockey's First Half Surge Takes Down St. Lawrence

Brigger records eighth goal of the season for the Brewers

CANTON, N.Y. - The Vassar College Field Hockey team capitalized on two first-half goals as the Brewers defeated St. Lawrence 2-1 on the road. Junior Hailey Brigger (San Diego, CA) scored her eighth goal of the season as Vassar improved to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in Liberty League play.

Vassar was on the attack early in the first quarter as the Brewers picked up a penalty corner 49 seconds into the contest. Brigger had her shot saved by Saints goalkeeper Lucy Adiutori and the St. Lawrence goaltender made three more saves in the opening six minutes.

Following a penalty corner from junior Jaclyn Narleski (Basking Ridge, NJ), the Brewers got on the board first as senior Sam Kass (Ann Arbor, MI) tallied her second goal of the season on an assist from classmate Ella Pearl (San Francisco, CA) with five minutes left in the opening period.

In the second quarter, Vassar picked up back to back penalty corners nine minutes into the period as Brigger tallied her goal coming off the corner to give the Brewers a 2-0 lead heading into the halftime intermission.

St. Lawrence got on the board at the 6:18 mark of the third quarter as the Saints earned back to back corners and Morgan Misiaszek found the back of the net off a feed from Suzanne L'Hommedieu. The Saints picked up two more corners later in the quarter but they were unable to get a shot off.

Sophomore Max Meijaard (Heemstede, The Netherlands) had a shot fired on goal late in the fourth quarter to extend the Vassar lead to two but Adiutori was able to make the save to keep the game within one. Vassar held the Saints to only one shot in the final period to take the 2-1 victory.

The Brewers outshot the Saints 15-2 in the contest and outshot St. Lawrence 9-1 in shots on goal. Vassar also held the edge in penalty corners at 14-5.

Vassar returns to the field at home on Wednesday evening as the Brewers will take on Scranton in non-conference action. The contest with the Royals is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Weinberg Field.
