GENEVA, N.Y. - It was a defensive battle on Saturday afternoon as Vassar College and William Smith College played to a scoreless draw in Liberty League women's soccer action. The Brewers move to 7-4-3 overall and 3-2-2 in league play, while the fifth-ranked Herons are now 11-1-3 and 6-0-2 in the Liberty League.

Violet Munnelly had the Brewers first shot on goal in the opening half, tearing toward the net in the 13th minute for a hard-fired in shot at Herons goalie Kirsten Nelson - who made the quick stop. William Smith saw a number of shots go wide, but Herons' Ruth Hotaling recorded the home team's lone shot on goal in the 20th minute, firing in a shot on Brewers keeper
Teresa Zimmer as she scooped it up to keep it scoreless.
In the 44th minute just before half, sophomore
London Wilkes fired a shot in on goal, but Nelson was there for the stop to keep things locked at 0-0 heading into intermission.
Both teams continued their defensive battle into the second half. Vassar had a pair of solid attempts in the 59th minute as junior
Claire Karlin had a shot blocked and one go just wide right seconds later. William Smith countered as Ava Ruppersberger sent in a shot, which banked right and away to continue the stalemate. In the 88th minute, sophomore
Madison Bouggess tried to give Vassar the go-ahead, but her shot slipped just high and out as time expired.
For the contest, the Herons owned a 12-7 advantage in shots, while the Brewers held a 2-1 edge in shots on goal for the contest. William Smith also had a 5-0 advantage in penalty corners.
In goal, Vassar's Zimmer recorded one save, while Nelson had two stops for the Herons.
The Brewers return to action on Wednesday, traveling to Rensselaer for a Liberty League contest. Game time is set for 7pm.
